New Lewistown restaurant gains in recent popularity

LEWISTOWN – ‘Fresh. Fast. Fabulous, Food’ that’s the motto of the new restaurant, the Hilltop Gourmet Eatery, which opened on Valley Street in Lewistown. Chef Nikki Nicholson and co-owner Katie Price opened the Hilltop on December 1st of 2020 have been gaining popularity and many repeat customers ever since. The duo are the sole proprietors of the restaurant which is open 5 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. “We offer a different variety. If you look at our menu we do offer a wide variety from breakfast, appetizers, quesadillas, sandwiches, salads, soups, evening entrees as well as our specials we run every day.” Nicholson said, ” We have some steakhouse items like baked salmon and New Orleans-style crab cakes which is a very popular item here. The food speaks for itself.” Nicholson, who is a 5 star chef with nearly 30 years of experience in the culinary arts, that food must speak very loudly.

One look at the Hilltop Gourmet Eatery menu and customers can see the variety that chef Nicholson was talking about. The menu includes Belgian waffles, biscuits & gravy, eggs benedict with asparagus & crab, cranberry apple nut chicken salad sandwich, herbed caprese & chicken sandwich, roasted sweet potato & black bean quesadilla, baked salmon salad, meat or vegetable lasagna, and meatloaf. That is just a few of the many items made to order at the Hilltop. “The way we’re set up gives us an immediate with our customer. It’s not like the cook is back there, they (customer) don’t know what’s going on with their food. They can stand there and watch if the y want.” Nicholson said, ” I personalize each plate that I make.” A selection of homemade desserts is also offered at the restaurant including the very popular banana split cake. All the dressings and sauces are also made in house.

Nicholson and Price plan on eventually having more themed specials in the future such as Mexican Monday or Waffle Wednesday as well as introduce some new menu items.

Prior to moving to Mifflin County Nicholson was an executive chef at restaurants in Virginia City, Nevada and Elkins, West Virginia. Over the years Nicholson would visit friends in the Juniata Valley and was eventually inspired to open a restaurant in the area that could offer a different kind of dinning experience to customers.

The Hilltop Gourmet Eatery, located at 622 Valley Street, is currently open 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The restaurant can be reached at (717) 247-7026. The Hilltop Gourmet Eatery is available for dine in, take out or to cater and/of host small parties.
