COVID-19 continues to surge locally

21 new coronavirus deaths reported in Mifflin County over the past 7 days

Despite the emergency authorization of a vaccine for COVID-19 for the first time on Friday, the numbers of COVID-19 cases and deaths locally continues to rage on steadily with each local county adding more than 200 new cases over the past week, according to data released Monday by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

In Mifflin County over the past week, 21 additional deaths attributed to the virus were reported, meaning now 76 Mifflin Countians' lives have been claimed by COVID-19. There were another 486 cases reported this week, moving Mifflin County's total to 2,811 since the pandemic began.

In Juniata County, 222 new cases were reported, which crossed it over the dubious milestone of 1,000 cases at 1,044 total. Another nine deaths were also reported, meaning now 27 in Juniata County have died due at least partially to COVID-19.

Snyder County saw another 209 cases added to its total, which is now 1,421. Six more COVID deaths among Snyder County residents put its death toll at 30.

In Huntingdon Couny, 293 new cases were discovered, making that total now 2,269. Seven more Huntingdon County COVID-19 deaths has that county's total at 69.

Perry County saw a big surge in cases with an additional 300 for a new total of 1,148. One more COVID death was also reported, leaving now 16 Perry Countians who have died at least partially due to the virus.

Health department data shows as of Monday, there are currently 48 people hospitalized in Mifflin County with COVID-19 and nine of those patients in the adult intensive care unit. There is currently only one available adult ICU bed in Mifflin County, according to the health department, but no patients currently on ventilators.

In Huntingdon County, there are 11 COVID-19 patients in the hospital with three in the ICU. There are currently two available adult ICU beds in Huntingdon County, according to the health department.
