YEAGERTOWN -- With local numbers rising, local insitiutions are trying to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic before it gets worse. The Derry Township Supervisors discussed a personnel policy during Monday night's meeting to plan for the contingency that a staff member were to contract the virus.
Chairman Ron Napikoski, a health care industry professional himself, spoke about how the pandemic threatens the area.
"From the COVID-19 early warning website, Mifflin County is still number one in the state as far as the rate of transmission per hundred thousands residents in the last week. I think Derry Township needs to highly encourage all residents and business owners in Derry Township to take all measures to prevent the disease," Napikoski said. "People are ignoring it. Our nursing homes are full of it and are being overwhelmed by it. Our hospital and resources are being significantly taxed, and we need to take it seriously."
The township approved the plan to follow Centers for Disease Control and Department of Health guidelines in terms of how to keep personnel safe and what procedures to follow in the event of a positive case in the work area.
Darla Rickert, a representative for Shining Lights Through the Darkness, also spoke to the board. As of now, the event set to go ahead as-scheduled. There will be no train room this year. The food stand will be open like normal but will have minimal contact. A golf cart will be available still to provide transportation to spectators. Masks, sanitizer and handwashing stations will be available.
Mifflin County Planning Director Mark Colussy also briefed the board on a walking trail study that had recently been performed.
In other business the board:
¯Approved the minutes from last meeting.
¯Approved the payment to relocate the Subaru sign, $13,354.
¯Approved Resolution 2020-23, appointing William Gomes as alternate on the Derry Township Planning Commission.
¯Approved Myra Bannon's request to sponsor a pavilion at Kish Park in memory of a family member.
¯Approved ADA parking at 537 Woodland Avenue.
¯Approved a $2,200 donation to Mifflin County Library.
¯Approved application for County Aid to encumber 2020 funds in amount of $8,892.24.
¯Approved purchase of a thumb for the backhoe, $5,996 + $600 hauling.
The Derry Township Supervisors will meet again at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, 2020, at the Derry Township Municipal Building.
