Police: 1 dead in tractor-trailer crash

US 322 East shut down for several hours

REEDSVILLE -- One person is dead as the result of a single tractor-trailer crash late Monday morning on U.S. 322 East in Brown Township in the area known as the "twin bridges," according to Mifflin County Regional Police Department Chief Andre French.

French said the driver, Scott Mogel, 49, of Lewistown, was traveling on U.S. 322 East attempting to negotiate a left curve when, at around 11:35 a.m., the vehicle drifted to the right, left the roadway, struck the guide rail and overturned into a deep roadside ditch, spilling its payload of wood chips. The crash heavily damaged several hundred feet of guide rail.

French said Mogel, who was the only victim, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Mifflin County Coroner's Office.

U.S. 322 East was shut down at the Reedsville/Belleville interchange with traffic being diverted onto Old U.S. 322 to Burnham. The shutdown lasted for several hours while crews cleaned up the roadway and removed the tractor-trailer from the scene.

Reedsville Fire Co., Yeagertown Fire Co., City Hook and Ladder, Fame EMS, Milroy EMS, the Pennsylvania State Police, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Derry Township Fire Police also assisted MCRPD on scene.
