FAME EMS establishes local EMT Scholarship

Academy Foundation receives contribution

2 min read

LEWISTOWN --The Academy Foundation recently received a contribution from FAME EMS Chief Pat Shoop, for the creation of two Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Training scholarships at The Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology. Foundation President Jeffrey Gum, and Foundation Treasurer Eric Sherman, were on hand to accept the donation.

"EMTs are desperately needed in our local communities and across the state," said Shoop. "With the creation of this scholarship, we hope to make it easier for students to access the training needed so we can get more people into this field."

The EMT scholarship will be for two medical science students who are interested in pursuing EMT training at The Academy. A part-time, evening EMT class is scheduled to start on March 16. The 200-hour course will run until Aug. 8.

"All of us on the Foundation Board are excited about this partnership," said Gum. "Our Foundation is still relatively new, so it's important for the community to see employers like FAME EMS supporting local career and technical training opportunities at The Academy. We hope this is the start of many other training scholarships."

The Foundation will work closely with The Academy on the application process and selection of the recipients.

The Academy became accredited by the Seven Mountains EMS Council to offer emergency medical service training for adults this past summer. The Academy is able to offer both Emergency Medical Responder and Emergency Medical Technician training. The school ran a 75-hour EMR program in the fall and is currently advertising for the EMT class.

"The interest in our EMT class has been great, so I'm hoping we'll be able to develop more scholarships for training," explained Mike McMonigal, supervisor of adult and post-secondary education at The Academy. "When our family, friends, and neighbors need emergency medical services, we all want someone to answer the call."
