LEWISTOWN -- Winter weather is here which makes it easier for infants to catch RSV.
Dr. Bijal Patel, of Geisinger Lewistown, wants to make people aware of the Respiratory Syncytial Virus this holiday season.
Some of the symptoms of RSV are a low-grade fever, congestion, coughing and sneezing.
RSV can be transmitted by direct or indirect contact.
This virus affects babies less than 1 year old and any infants who contract the virus are contagious up to eight days. The human body becomes immune to it the more it is exposed to the virus, Patel said.
"Prevention is the key here," Patel said. "If you have an infant less than six months old, make sure you wash your hands with soap and water after being in contact with the baby and clean all surfaces daily."
