LEWISTOWN-- A 33-year-old man accused of allegedly headbutting and strangling a woman, before being pulled over by police over the weekend while intoxicated, is behind bars.
Craig R. McMullen, of Lewistown, was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Reed on Saturday.
According to court documents, about 1 a.m. Saturday, a Pennsylvania State Police officer responded to a domestic dispute at 215 Terrace Boulevard, Juniata Terrace Borough. The woman told police that McMullen headbutted and choked her after he had been drinking, and then left the house in a tan Ford Ranger.
According to court documents, before police arrived at the home, a second state police officer pulled McMullen over on Delaware Avenue. Police said he smelled of alcohol, his eyes were glassy and bloodshot and he was slurring his speech.
During a police interview, McMullen said he wanted to engage in intercourse with his girlfriend, but she refused, which caused an argument.
During the interview, one officer said he heard "the sound of Velcro" leading him to believe that he had a firearm and arrested him under suspicion of driving under the influence.
According to court documents, the woman, McMullen's girlfriend, said she refused his advances for intercourse, which led him to headbutting her, causing a nosebleed. The woman said she yelled for her daughter and McMullen grabbed her throat two times and both times she broke free, then ran to the basement.
According to court documents, McMullen followed her to the basement and pinned her to the floor and her daughter called police.
The documents state that McMullen left the house, but came back shortly after and kicked the back door of the residence, causing the door and door jam to break and cut the window screen of the window next to the back door and that he also threw a crock pot from the kitchen down the stairs into the basement before leaving in his truck.
McMullen is in Mifflin County Correctional Facility in lieu of $150,000 cash bail.
He is awaiting a preliminary hearing scheduled for Wednesday and is facing charges of felony aggravated assault, two counts of strangulation, misdemeanor driving under the influence, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, criminal mischief, summary harassment and related traffic offenses.
