JC Library to kick off summer reading
MIFFLINTOWN – The Juniata County Library’s summer reading kickoff will be held on Friday.
Registration starts at 2 p.m., and a puppet show by Adam Swartz Puppets is from 3 to 4 p.m. in the community room in the lower level of the library.
There will be food and refreshments for sale. There also will be lawn signs that patrons can pick up for free and place on their lawns signifying they are taking part in the summer reading programs.
Reedsville plans community event
REEDSVILLE -Reedsville Community Day is Saturday at Bender Park, just off Tony Street, Reedsville.
Events include:
6 a.m. -Breakfast in the Park by the Evangelic Lutheran Church members in the north pavilion;
9 a.m. – Juniata Striders 5K race, with awards at 10 a.m.;
11 a.m. – Pickle eating contest;
Noon -Pie eating contest at noon;
1 p.m. -Free community giant ice cream sundae;
2 p.m. -Little Miss Reedsville contest;
3 p.m. -Community Pet Show.
Several area church youth groups will provide games for kids, and there will be lots of food and a park full of craft vendors.
Relay For Life set for Saturday, Sunday
LEWISTOWN -The Mifflin/Juniata Relay for Life will be held Saturday and Sunday at Kish Park in Lewistown.
The theme is Rockin’ At Relay – Our Relayers Are Rockstars!
There will be stage entertainment featuring the Miss-ter Relay Pageant, Relay’s Got Talent, Lewistown Community Band at noon on Saturday, Glow Fitness, Chesney Auction and much more.
There will be food truck vendors, as well as food provided by teams at their campers.
Winne the Pooh story to be retold
BOALSBURG – A presentation entitled “The True Story of Winne the Pooh,” will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Pennsylvania Military Museum.
The presentation tells the story of the real bear at the London Zoo, adopted by a Canadian Regimental veterinarian before shipping overseas for service on the front in World War I, that inspired author A.A. Milne.
Tuscarora Academy is open for season
ACADEMIA -The Tuscarora Academy in Academia is open from 1:30 to 4 p.m. every Sunday through the end of August.
The academy is the museum of the Juniata County Historical Society.
Model cars gearing up for Sunday race
LEWISTOWN -The Model Car Racing Club will hold a race at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Anyone interested in viewing the race may contact Mike Bienkowski at 543-6536. Seating is limited to the first 10 people who respond.
The club was organized in 2006, when model cars were purchased and built into slot cars that run on a track that was at Kish Park in the 1970s.
The track has a running distance of 82 feet and is wired to a computer that counts the laps, displays the lap times and calculates the mile per hour in scale speed.
The cars run in excess of 200 mph scale speed.
Club members meet once a month to compete for points and prizes.
South Hills concert series continues
STATE COLLEGE South Hills School of Business and Technology’s 2016 Music Picnic Series continues at 6 p.m. on Sunday at the main campus on Waupelani Drive in State College.
The Wagner Goldstein Jazz Project will perform jazz standards from the swing era, be-bop and contemporary tunes from artists such as Billy Strayhorn, Bill Evans, Miles Davis and Wayne Shorter.
The free concerts are held rain or shine. Bring blankets, chairs and a picnic supper, if desired. Refreshments and light picnic fare will be available for purchase.
Grounds open at 5 p.m. The music begins at 6 p.m. and lasts until 7:30 p.m.

Keniston art exhibit to open in Newport
NEWPORT -Perry County Council of the Arts will host “Work in Progress,” an exhibition featuring the work of young artist Emily Keniston, from Friday until Aug. 6 at PCCA Gallery, One S. Second Street, Newport.
Follow the journey of this promising, up-and-coming artist through her exploration in various media, including colored pencil, graphite, charcoal, acrylic and oil. Keniston will display a collection of artwork that is a work-in-progress representation of her journey as a young art student.
Keniston graduated from West Perry High School in Elliottsburg in 2014, the same year that she won Best in Show for her oil painting “Indigenous” at PCCA’s annual Youth Art Day. She is enrolled in Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia, where she earned first place for an expressive drawing entered in the college’s 2015 Beyond the Dot exhibition.
The opening reception will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday.

EAST WATERFORD – The 28th Annual Tuscarora Valley Heritage Days is scheduled for June 16 to 19 at the Tuscarora Valley Heritage Grounds, 6201 Route 75 South, East Waterford.

Faith Festival to take place June 18
LEWISTOWN – A Faith Festival sponsored by the Lewistown Ministerium will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 18 on the Mifflin County Library grounds.
The Lewistown Community Band will play at 10 a.m.
The event will feature booths set up by local churches to distribute information on their congregations, church bulletins, Vacation Bible School and more.
Also planned are food stands, a bounce house, pony rides, Toodles the Clown and live music.
Yarn bombing event workshops planned
LEWISTOWN -Area residents are invited to participate in the Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau’s 2016 Goose Day Community Knitting Project.
There are four steps and participants can take part in as many or as few as desired:
1. Attend a free workshop if you don’t know how to knit, or want a refresher.
2. Create knitted pieces.
3. Yarn bomb the library on Sept. 25.
4. Repurpose the knitted pieces as a fundraiser.
Free learn-to-knit workshops, as well as knitting needles and yarn, will be available for anyone who would like to participate, although attending a workshop is not required.
The first workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on June 18 on the steps of the Mifflin County Historic Courthouse in Lewistown. Bring a chair and refreshments, if wanted. If it rains, the workshop will be held in the courtroom.

Participants are asked to created knitted pieces that will be used to yarn bomb the Mifflin County Library at 2 p.m. on Sept. 25. The pieces will be removed on Oct. 9, washed and repurposed into scarves and blankets, to be sold for the benefit of Shelter Services.

Archaeology Day Camp to be held
GREENWOOD FURNACE -Diggin the Past Archaeology Day Camp at Greenwood Furnace State Park is scheduled for June 20 to 24.
The Archaeology Day Camp offers historically-minded young people and adults the opportunity to participate in an authentic archaeological dig at Greenwood Furnace. During the camp, participants will experience aspects of archaeology, from proper digging and removal of artifacts, to the cleaning and cataloging of what is found.

July 1-Lewistown Community Band’s annual Let Freedom Ring concert will take place in front of The Embassy.
July 2 – The Embassy’s “All Day Libertyfest” will run from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., featuring live music from The Wrecking Crew, Laskaris’ Hot Dog Eating Contest, WCHX broadcasting live from atop the theatre marquee, River Valley Idol finals, fireworks, vendors, a free movie night outside on the wall, and a performance by Margaret McCann’s Dance Troupe.
Aug. 5 – Elvis Presley tribute, including a movie, live music and vendors.

PORT ROYAL – The Big Tree Art and Music Festival is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 9 at Port Royal Lions Club Park.

Music festival to benefit Red Cross
MILLERSTOWN – The First annual Summer Music Festival to benefit the American Red Cross will be held at Millerstown Community Park July 15 to 17.
The festival will feature live bands all day, silent auction, blood drive, craft and direct sale vendors, kids area featuring pony rides and face painting, pet picture contest and much more.
Volunteers in all areas of the festival are also needed for the event. Scout groups, churches or any community organizations are invited to volunteer, and anyone volunteering for a six-hour shift will receive a set of tickets to the festival for their time.
A blood drive will be held at the Millerstown Moose, which is directly across from the festival grounds, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 16. Shuttle transportation will be available from the festival main entrance to the blood drive. Donors can signup for the blood drive by going to redcrossblood.org and using sponsor code: BIGFOOT, or by calling 889-0338.

A.B.A.T.E. event to benefit McClure pool

LEWISTOWN -The All County Marching Band Reunion will be held Oct. 14 during the Huskies’ Homecoming Football Game.
Anyone who has ever played in a marching band either, locally or elsewhere, is welcome to participate.
