BELLEVILLE – The Belleville Civic Club is asking drivers through town to slow down for the safety of the community.
“Some months ago, club member Ann McNabb addressed club members with a real concern over the safety of residents in Big Valley,” a press release from the club states.
“The 35 mph speed limit is many times ignored and quite dangerous for those individuals trying to cross the street,” the press release said.
Club members also express concern for the Amish who travel the local roads.
In an effort to call attention to the speed limit, the club’s Special Projects Committee purchased signs for the community.
The club feels “if we can save one life, it was worth the effort.”
With the arrival of spring, the club said, traffic has become busier in Big Valley, especially on Wednesdays.
“Perhaps the ideal would be to try and lower the speed limit as has been done in other small rural communities,” the club said.
“The Civic Club will continue to watch and address issues as they arise, and to encourage drivers to respect our valley and please slow down.”
