Walk-in bowlers are

welcome Saturday

LEWISTOWN – Walk-in bowlers will be welcome to join the Big Brothers Big Sisters flagship fundraiser at Lewistown Lanes on Saturday.

Walk-in bowlers can attend from 9 to 11 a.m. and again from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. Registration is $50 per person. The registration fee includes shoes, two hours of bowling, hot dogs, chips and soda.

Any individual bowler who raises over $100 will be entered into a drawing to win one of the following: $200 gift card to Mike’s Video; $50 vouchers for a Cross Country Coach sponsored bus trip; all-day fun passes to DelGrosso Amusement Park; admissions to Lake Tobias Adventure Park and Safari Tour; adult admissions to Miller Cinemas; a $15 gift certificate to Cafe Madora; a large Frank’s cheese pizza; gift certificate to Sweet Frog; general admission tickets to Carnegie Science Center; or Big Daddy’s Grill -N- Chill dinner vouchers.

Midd-West musical set

to open on Friday

MIDDLEBURG – The Midd-West Middle School production of “The Ever After-A-Musical,” will be being presented at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday in the Midd-West Middle School cafeteria in Middleburg.

In this hilarious parody of daytime TV, the host wonders if time truly heals all wounds. This hysterical fractured fairy tale has it all – a trash-talking clairvoyant mirror, an unfortunate prince who is turning slowly back into a frog and even Jiminy Cricket, who is now an occupational therapist and author of the book “My Life as Your Conscience.”

Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for students.

PCCA offers art classes at the Landis House

NEWPORT – The Perry County Council of the Arts has several classes scheduled for April at the Landis House, 67 N. Fourth St., Newport.

A Drop-In Art Class will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The class is free and open to the public.

Introduction to Soapstone Carving will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. on April 13. The cost is $35, or $31.50 for PCCA members.

Soldered Cross Bracelet class is from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on April 27. The cost is $50, or $45 for PCCA members.

A Drop-In Art Class will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on May 7. The class is free and open to the public.

Wheat Weaving will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on May 21. The cost is $35, or $31.50 for PCCA members.

Centre County Historical Society events planned

BELLEFONTE – The Centre County Historical Society has several events planned in the near future.

A reception and program on the Underground railroad – A Journey to Freedom, will be held from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Bellefonte Art Museum for Centre County.

The program Searching for a Pennsylvania German Ancestor will be held by the Centre County Genealogical Society at 7 p.m. on April 7 at Foxdale’s Meeting Room (second floor), State College.

“The First Team: U.S. Naval Aviation at the Dawn of WWII,” will be featured at 1 p.m. on April 9 at the Pennsylvania Military Museum.

The Pasto Agricultural Museum Open House will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. on April 17 at the Pasto Museum on the Ag Progress Days grounds at Russell E. Larson Agricultural Research Center at Rock Springs, nine miles southwest of State College.

The Old House Fair will be held April 29 and 30 at the Pennsylvania Match Factory in Bellefonte. The workshop is for anyone who owns an old house or building and is interested in how to approach issues that are unique to them.

The Bellefonte Big Spring Festival is slated for noon to 4 p.m. on May 15 at Talleyrand Park, Bellefonte.

BOALSBURG -The Friends’ Richard Koontz Memorial Lecture Series continues at 7:30 p.m. on April 6 at the Pennsylvania Military Museum.

The topic will be the Mexican Border War.” Ret. U.S. Army Maj. Gen. John Stevens will discuss President Wilson’s 1916 decision to send Brigadier General John Pershing and the Punitive Expedition into Mexico in pursuit of revolutionary Francisco “Pancho” Villa, who raided the border town of Columbus, New Mexico, killing 18 Americans and setting fire to several buildings.

McALISTERVILLE -The Second Annual Senior Citizens’ Spring Luncheon, hosted by the Juniata County School District and Metz Culinary Management, will be held at 1 p.m. on April 6 at East Juniata High School.

Musical entertainment and artwork on display;

Student-led tours of the school;

The opportunity to meet school district faculty, staff and administrators, as well as school board members.

BPW Wellness run scheduled for April 9

MIFFLINTOWN -The Juniata County Business and Professional Women, supported by Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital and the Juniata Valley Striders running club, will host the 6th Annual Wellness 5K Event on April 9, at Cedar Grove Church in Mifflintown.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the race starts at 10 a.m.

The route is a 5K (3.1-mile) wheel-measured course beginning and ending at the church. Prizes will be given to the fastest overall male and female runners, as well as the top three male and female finishers in each of seven age groups.

Race day entry fees are $20 for adults and $15 for students. If registered by Friday, entry fees are reduced to $17 for adults and $12 for students. All early-bird registrants will be guaranteed an event T-shirt and goodie bag; limited quantities will be available on race day.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Juniata County BPW community service projects.

Quilters guild to host Pineapple Workshop

MIFFLINTOWN -Nancy Bills, quilt designer and instructor for more than 10 years, will visit the Juniata Valley Quilters Guild on April 16.

She will present a Pineapple Workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by a lecture at 6:30 p.m., titled “Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow: Some of My Quilts & Things I’ve Learned Along the Way.”

Both programs will take place at Four Seasons Senior Center on CJEMS Lane in Mifflintown.

The workshop will teach the technique for a four block wall hanging, which may need to be completed later. Tips for layout and design based on this block pattern will be included.

The pattern will be included in the class fee of $30 per person. Anyone is welcome to participate as long as openings remain. Call Ann Hart at 463-3885 for a supply list and reservation.

The evening program is open to the public, and no reservations are needed. Guild members are admitted free. There will be a $10 admission fee for non-members.

BELLEVILLE – Belleville Mennonite School will hold its 51st annual auction on April 15 and 16 at the school on 4105 Front Mountain Road, Belleville.

The gift certificate auction begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, and Saturday’s activities begin at 6:30 a.m. with a homemade pancake and sausage breakfast. The merchandise auction starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, and quilts will be sold at 1:30 p.m.

Fresh strawberry pies, hoagies, baked goods, soups, salads, hot sausage sandwiches and more will also be sold throughout the weekend.

A turkey dinner will also be served with all of the traditional fixings on Friday, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., or until the food is gone. No advanced ticket sales are available. Take-outs will be available. The dinner will be free for children younger than 3 years old; $7, ages 4 to 10; $11, ages 11 and older. Families of five or more is $45.

MIFFLINTOWN -The Second Annual Oldies Dance will be held from 7:30 to 10:30 on April 22 at the CJEMS Building in Mifflintown.

This dance will benefit the Juniata County Food Pantry and the Juniata County Library. The cost is $10 per person.

Listeners will hear music from the ’50s and ’60s, but also oldies from the ’70s and ’80s as DJ Charlie Stump will be on hand to provide the music.

In addition to the dance, the kitchen will open at 7 p.m. with caterer Diane Cunningham offering an expanded dinner menu.

Founder’s Day brunch is planned

NEW BERLIN – Xi Beta Sigma, the Middleburg Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, welcomes chapters and member-at-large to attend the Founder’s Day Brunch being held on April 23 at the Inn of New Berlin.

The event will begin at 10:30 a.m., with dulcimer music performed by Bob Gutheinz, and tours of the inn.

The formal meeting begins at 11 a.m., with brunch being served at 11:30 a.m.

The cost of the meal is $25.

Vocalists invited to join Snyder Co. choir

BEAVERTOWN -Vocalists are invited to join the West Snyder Community Choir.

The group has about 20 active singers and particularly needs additional altos, tenors and basses. There are no auditions, the only requirements are that you like to sing and can read the music.

The choir performs year-round throughout the area. Shows include a broad spectrum of numbers, including patriotic, gospel, sacred, show tunes and others. A late spring concert is being planned, and will feature a variety of music. The choir is under the direction of Margie Krebs.

Practices are held at 7 p.m. on the first and third Thursday of each month at the Beavertown United Methodist Church. Rehearsals are being held to prepare for the upcoming spring concert and Memorial Day services.

New members from the nearby area are welcome. The current members come from the area of McClure to Kreamer. To become a member, call Krebs at (570) 658-4081, see any member, or simply show up at a practice.

Old photos of Kid Connection sought

LEWISTOWN -Kid Connection has brought Downtown Lewistown alive on the last Saturday of April for the past 33 years. Parents, children and other family members swarm Monument Square and the surrounding streets to enjoy free kids’ activities, live entertainment, and more.

The Kid Connection Committee asks the public to submit digital photo files of themselves, their kids, friends, and/or their family at a previous Kid Connection. Faces must be visible in the photos.

All files received will be put on public display in store windows on the festival grounds during this year’s Kid Connection on April 30. Names will not be associated with the photos.

This is not a contest and prizes will not be awarded.

The printed photos will not be returned to the owner of the photograph(s) and the digital files the event committee receives will not be kept by the committee.

BEAVERTOWN – Vocalists are invited to join the West Snyder Community Choir.

The group has about 20 active singers and particularly needs additional altos, tenors and basses.

The choir is under the direction of Margie Krebs.

Practices are held at 7 p.m. on the first and third Thursday of each month at the Beavertown United Methodist Church. Rehearsals are being held to prepare for the upcoming spring concert and Memorial Day services.

New members from the nearby area are welcome. The current members come from the area of McClure to Kreamer.

Musicians to perform

in two local concerts

LEWISTOWN – John and Kathie Hollandsworth and Eddie Ogle will perform at the Mini-Mountain Laurel Concert Series Friday and Saturday in Lewistown and Newport.

They will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 120 N. Main St., Lewistown, and at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at Highland United Presbyterian Church, 11 Church Road, Newport.

All concerts are free and open to the public. A free will offering will be accepted at the door.

In addition, a three-hour instructional autoharp workshop will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Orthey Instruments in Newport. All levels are welcome.

The Hollandsworths and Ogle, of southwestern Virginia, have been making music together since the 1980s. Their style comes straight out of their native Appalachians, but also includes the sounds of early country music, Celtic traditions and more modern tunes.

They have appeared in the Mini-Mountain Laurel series and at the Mountain Laurel Autoharp Gathering several times.

John is a champion autoharp player, well-known and respected teacher of the instrument, and 2010 inductee into the Autoharp Hall of Fame.

Kathie plays bass fiddle and hammered dulcimer, and she sings lead and harmony vocals in the groups varied song repertoire.

Ogle is a harmonica player, guitarist and singer. His award-winning harmonica playing features both slow, lyrical melodies and fast dance tunes. He sings and has written several original songs on themes of mountain life.

Huertgen Forest topic of program

BOALSBURG – The documentary, “You Enter Germany – Bloody Huertgen and the Siegfried Line,” will be featured at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Pennsylvania Military Museum

Between September of 1944 and February 1945, the U.S. Army fought for control of a 50 square mile area of dense forest along the German/Belgium border. It was the longest single battle, and largest defeat of the American Army in Europe. This 2007 German production tells that story, along with a synopsis of the war, through veteran’s interviews and archival footage.

McALISTERVILLE – The Second Annual Senior Citizens’ Spring Luncheon, hosted by the Juniata County School District and Metz Culinary Management, will be held at 1 p.m. on April 6 at East Juniata High School.

A free meal served by the East Juniata High School Student Council;

Musical entertainment and artwork on display;

Student-led tours of the school;

The opportunity to meet school district faculty, staff and administrators, as well as school board members.

BPW Wellness run scheduled for April 9

MIFFLINTOWN – The Juniata County Business and Professional Women, supported by Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital and the Juniata Valley Striders running club, will host the 6th Annual Wellness 5K Event on April 9, at Cedar Grove Church in Mifflintown.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the race starts at 10 a.m.

The route is a 5K (3.1-mile) wheel-measured course beginning and ending at the church. Prizes will be given to the fastest overall male and female runners, as well as the top three male and female finishers in each of seven age groups.

Race day entry fees are $20 for adults and $15 for students. If registered by March 25, entry fees are reduced to $17 for adults and $12 for students. All early-bird registrants will be guaranteed an event T-shirt and goodie bag; limited quantities will be available on race day.

Benefit Oldies Dance slated for April 22

MIFFLINTOWN – The Second Annual Oldies Dance will be held from 7:30 to 10:30 on April 22 at the CJEMS Building in Mifflintown.

This dance will benefit the Juniata County Food Pantry and the Juniata County Library. The cost is $10 per person.

Listeners will hear music from the ’50s and ’60s, but also oldies from the ’70s and ’80s as DJ Charlie Stump will be on hand to provide the music.

In addition to the dance, the kitchen will open at 7 p.m. with caterer Diane Cunningham offering an expanded dinner menu.

Second on 2nd features baskets and art show

NEWPORT – Head into downtown Newport from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday for Second on 2nd.

From 6 to 8 p.m., Perry County Council of the Arts will host a basket making trunk show with PCCA member artists Teena Beutel and Alice Sior at PCCA Gallery, One S. Second Street. Check out some lovely, handmade basket designs, perfect for spring and Easter.

LEWISTOWN – The Stone Arch Players’ winter production, “Moon Over The Brewery,” runs until Sunday at the Theatre-in the Park at Kish Park.

Dueling pianos event to take place on Saturday

LEWISTOWN – The second Annual Dueling Pianos event, hosted by Friends of Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital, has been rescheduled and will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Brookmere Winery in Belleville.

The cost is $100 per couple or $50 per individual with food and beverage services throughout the evening. Reservations for a table of eight will also be available.

All proceeds from this event will benefit the 2016 PA Pink Zone. Miliary museum will reopen this weekend

BOALSBURG – The Pennsylvania Military Museum will reopen for the season this weekend with a film festival beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday and free admission starting at noon on Sunday.

The events commemorate the granting of the Charter from King Charles II to William Penn, which founded “Penn’s Woods” in 1681.

On Sunday, Charter Day, free admission and tours of the galleries will be offered throughout the afternoon, beginning at noon.

The Pennsylvania Military Museum and 28th Division Shrine is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

Musicians to play at PCCA’s Landis House

NEWPORT – As part of its Sunday Arts Hour concert series, Perry County Council of the Arts will host pianist Barry Hannigan and flautist Mary Hannigan at Landis House, 67 N. Fourth St., Newport, at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

This will be their last Sunday Arts Hour concert before they move to Colorado. The concert will be followed by a reception with light refreshments and a chance to meet the performers. Annual Spring Fling slated for Saturday

MILLERSTOWN -Although it is not officially spring yet, Millerstown Community Success, Inc. will welcome many new vendors to its 24th Annual Spring Fling Craft Show on Saturday in the Greenwood Elementary School in Millerstown Borough 405 E. Sunbury St.

Doors will open at 7:45 a.m. and will be open until 2 p.m.

This year, Sun Home Health and Hospice of Millerstown will be there all day to provide free blood pressure screenings to those interested, and to provide information about the many services that they provide.

Vendors will offer jewelry, kettle corn, spring decorating items, Easter gifts, St. Patrick’s Day gifts and Mother’s Day gifts and early Christmas gifts.

Refreshments will be sold throughout the day, and door prizes donated by the vendors will be given away to visitors who are present throughout the day.

Meet guide dogs Gusto and Al

MILLERSTOWN -The public is invited to an informal public awareness program for people with limited sight and blindness. Devices and tools that can be used and obtained through agencies will also be shown and demonstrated, and information shared to inform people where to get the assistance that they need.

Information will also be shared outlining how dog guides are matched with people in need of assistance in getting around and doing daily chores and activities.

A current dog guide named Gusto will be part of the program, as well as a retired dog guide named Al. Darry Walker, who is now blind and has spent his entire life dealing with vision problems and how to cope with the disability, will be the speaker for the evening, and will bring his dogs with him.

The program will be held at 7 p.m. on March 17 beginning at the Millerstown Community Building on Juniata Parkway at the Millerstown Area Community Park. The program is free and light refreshments will be served.

McCLURE – The Veterans Memorial Pool in McClure will host the 8th annual Basket and Chinese Auction on Saturday at the McClure American Legion Social Room on the corner of Forbes and Ohio Streets.

29th annual Lip Sync

is slated for Saturday

LEWISTOWN – The Mifflin-Juniata Special Needs Center’s 29th Annual Lip Sync Contest will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the Mifflin County High School auditorium.

All proceeds benefit the programs and activities of the Special Needs Center.

Tickets are available at the Special Needs Center office at 31 S. Dorcas St., Lewistown.

Admission will be by advance ticket sales. Remaining seats will be sold a the door on a seat-available basis. All floor seating will be $10, and stadium seating is $8. All seats will be assigned, so come early to reserve preferred seats.

Millerstown Lions plan Pinochle card party

MILLERSTOWN – Plans have been finalized for the annual Pinochle card party sponsored by the Millerstown Lions Club in Millerstown. The event will be held on Saturday at the Greenwood Elementary School 405 E. Sunbury St. in Millerstown.

Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the party will begin at 6 p.m.

This annual event has been held by the Millerstown Lions for many years and is recognized as one of the most popular events of its kind in the area.

Prizes donated by local businesses will be awarded to the lucky winners, and nearly everyone is guaranteed a prize. In addition to the prizes given out, there is usually an auction of different items, so players should come prepared to find some bargains during the auction.

Profits from the annual event benefits Lions District 14T projects, including sight, diabetes, Beacon Lodge, Leader Dog and many others.

LEWISTOWN – The Mifflin County Library is hosting Breakfast and Books with the Easter Bunny from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on March 12 at the Lewistown location.

Dueling pianos has been rescheduled for March 12

LEWISTOWN – The second Annual Dueling Pianos event, hosted by Friends of Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital, has been rescheduled and will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. March 12 at Brookmere Winery in Belleville.

The cost is $100 per couple or $50 per individual with food and beverage services throughout the evening. Reservations for a table of eight will also be available.

All proceeds from this event will benefit the 2016 PA Pink Zone. Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital is a beneficiary of the PA Pink Zone funds and over the past four years has received more than $142,000 to support its breast care center and cancer treatment center. PA miliary museum will

reopen March 12-13

BOALSBURG – The Pennsylvania Military Museum will reopen for the season the weekend of March 12 and 13 with a film festival beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday and free admission starting at noon on Sunday.

The events commemorate the granting of the Charter from King Charles II to William Penn, which founded “Penn’s Woods” in 1681.

On Sunday, Charter Day, free admission and tours of the galleries will be offered throughout the afternoon, beginning at noon.

The Pennsylvania Military Museum and 28th Division Shrine is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

Musicians to play at PCCA’s Landis House

NEWPORT – As part of its Sunday Arts Hour concert series, Perry County Council of the Arts will host pianist Barry Hannigan and flautist Mary Hannigan at Landis House, 67 N. Fourth St., Newport, at 3 p.m. on March 13.

This will be their last Sunday Arts Hour concert before they move to Colorado. The concert will be followed by a reception with light refreshments and a chance to meet the performers. Be sure to stick around to view PCCA’s current exhibition, Interior, featuring the sculptures of Brian Menkis and the oil paintings of Naomi Menkis.

Annual Spring Fling slated for March 12

MILLERSTOWN – Although it is not officially spring yet, Millerstown Community Success, Inc. will welcome many new vendors to its 24th Annual Spring Fling Craft Show on March 12 in the Greenwood Elementary School in Millerstown Borough 405 E. Sunbury St.

Doors will open at 7:45 a.m. and will be open until 2 p.m.

This year, Sun Home Health and Hospice of Millerstown will be there all day to provide free blood pressure screenings to those interested, and to provide information about the many services that they provide.

Spring Fling sponsors are excited about the possibility of having one of the largest shows ever for the annual spring event. Daily calls from new vendors are being received and each new vendor adds more variety to the show. Vendors will offer jewelry, kettle corn, spring decorating items, Easter gifts, St. Patrick’s Day gifts and Mother’s Day gifts and early Christmas gifts.

Refreshments will be sold throughout the day, and door prizes donated by the vendors will be given away to visitors who are present throughout the day.

McALISTERVILLE – The Second Annual Senior Citizens’ Spring Luncheon, hosted by the Juniata County School District and Metz Culinary Management, will be held at 1 p.m. on April 6 at East Juniata High School.

Student-led tours of the school;

BPW Wellness run scheduled for April 9

MIFFLINTOWN – The Juniata County Business and Professional Women, supported by Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital and the Juniata Valley Striders running club, will host the 6th Annual Wellness 5K Event on April 9, at Cedar Grove Church in Mifflintown.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the race starts at 10 a.m.

The route is a 5K (3.1-mile) wheel-measured course beginning and ending at the church. Prizes will be given to the fastest overall male and female runners, as well as the top three male and female finishers in each of seven age groups.

Race day entry fees are $20 for adults and $15 for students. If registered by March 25, entry fees are reduced to $17 for adults and $12 for students. MIFFLINTOWN – The Second Annual Oldies Dance with Charlie Stump to benefit the Juniata County Food Pantry and the Juniata County Library will be held from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. on April 22 at the CJEMS Building.

Founder’s Day brunch is planned

Vocalists invited to join Snyder Co. choir

BEAVERTOWN – Vocalists are invited to join the West Snyder Community Choir.

The group has about 20 active singers and particularly needs additional altos, tenors and basses. There are no auditions, the only requirements are that you like to sing and can read the music.

The choir performs year-round throughout the area. Shows include a broad spectrum of numbers, including patriotic, gospel, sacred, show tunes and others. A late spring concert is being planned, and will feature a variety of music. The choir is under the direction of Margie Krebs.

Practices are held at 7 p.m. on the first and third Thursday of each month at the Beavertown United Methodist Church. Rehearsals are being held to prepare for the upcoming spring concert and Memorial Day services.
