MEXICO – Juniata County Business and Professional Women hosted several speakers at their meetings in November and December.
Two speakers were featured at the Nov. 17 meeting- Donna Jenkins, from SUN Home Health & Hospice, and Judy Fitzgerald, from Mifflin/Juniata Counties Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
Jenkins provided information on the services offered by SUN Home Health.
Fitzgerald spoke about the impact that Big Brothers and Big Sisters can have on a child, and the great need there is for people to become a Big Brother or Big Sister.
At the Dec. 15, meeting, the speaker was Daunis Karschner, of Lewistown.
She spoke about her experiences as a nurse in Saudi Arabia and 15 years in Alaska, as well as her time she spent backpacking and hiking across most of Europe and in 35 states.
Karschner brought several interesting articles from Alaska that she had collected, as well as many photographs. She provided many interesting stories of making Pennsylvania-specific foods in other countries, of which whoopie pies were particularly interesting. When she was asked by an Irish friend why they were called whoopie pies, she told her that after you eat one you want to say “whoopie!”, so every time her friend had one after that she’d always exclaim “whoopie!” afterwards.
The Juniata County BPW again plans to pack “Boxes of Love” for the women veterans at the Mary E Walker House in February. Participating members filled decorative boxes with items such as gloves, hats, scarves, devotionals, stamps, envelopes.
