LEWISTOWN — NuVisions opened their doors at a second location at 20 Depot St. in Lewistown, after outgrowing their Valley Street location. This second location will serve as the business’ center for administration and human resources, as well as for production, while the Valley Street location will only house production.

NuVisions was created to assist the visually impaired. “Since 1945, we have evolved to being able to help people with all kinds of disabilities,” said Kate Long, the director of community service for NuVisions.

NuVisions offers job opportunities to people with disabilities. The business offers employment in numerous fields, including making window covers, washcloths, blankets, and embroidery. People employed by NuVisions might also work in sublimation or janitorial work.

NuVisions also provides transportation to medical appointments, for other essential errands, referrals, and other social work.

NuVisions’ new location is more accessible for parking and walking. It is also much more convenient for receiving and shipping goods and materials.

The new location provides NuVisions with opportunities to serve within the community. “We really want to become more of a community element,” explained Jonathan Cunningham, president and CEO of NuVisions.

Because the business is conveniently within downtown Lewistown, its employees are able to better serve the area.

The building is located between the homeless shelter and the Compass building, and is within walking distance from most of the downtown area. “It felt like a natural fit,” said Cunningham. “This is the part of town we feel like we need to be in.”

This opening at Depot Street is only the beginning of the expansion plan, as NuVisions looks to renovate and expand both of their current locations. Those in charge of the expansion will make the locations as accessible and practical as possible.

NuVisions staff would also like to add locations in Juniata and Huntingdon Counties so that more clients may access their services.

NuVisions’ business and production takes place between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., and community service occurs from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
