Flea Market sets its new site underway at Drive-in Theatre

MIFFLINTOWN — Midway Drive-in Theater will soon be the site of a flea market.

The market will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays March 25 through October, weather permitting, according to owners Lacie and Timothy Wert

The owners said the drive-in makes a great location for events like a flea market.

“Our inspiration for the flea market started with brainstorming various ways that we could utilize the space, since the drive-in only operates Friday through Sundays during event hours. It is just a huge unoccupied area throughout the week and during the day on weekends,” Midway co-owner Lacie Wert said. “Originally, we thought it would be nice to just hold a flea market a few times during the summer, which we shared in a previous Lewistown Sentinel newspaper article about the drive-in. The article was read by a local flea market enthusiast, who reached out and offered to help make it a regular event.”

The Werts began seeking vendors to bring the event to fruition. According to Lacie Wert, the response was overwhelming and made them even more excited about doing the flea market.

“We began posting some flyers around the Mifflintown area and sharing with community groups on Facebook, as well as posting to our Facebook page. The latter had an enormous response, reaching almost 34,000 people who saw the Market information at least once,” Wert said. “This exceeded our expectations, which is a good thing! As a result, we’re getting a lot of responses, messages and phone calls from potential vendors too, some from an hour or more away. It is starting to sound like this could be more than just a yard sale.”

Lacie said they are expecting antiques and vintage items, as well as some handmade arts and crafts, fishing gear, crystals and collectibles.

“We also reached out to some local farmers and the Amish community, as we’d love to see some flowers and plants or even baked goods and produce. So you just never know what you might find and the best part is that it could be different every time.”

The Werts truly believe that this will be beneficial to the Juniata County community as well as any local business who is trying to build on their businesses and give people options on a wide variety of different items.

“A market can be a great opportunity for everyone in the community,” Wert said. “We hope the market will help bring more people to the area and other businesses as well as provide a chance to feed more money back into the rural economy where many vendors live.”

The Werts invite anyone to come and enjoy the fun of their inaugural flea market and that this is something that they want to help build the community and bring everyone together.

“Our message to the people who are planning to come is to remember that this is something new for all of us, so we will make minor adjustments as we go,” Wert said. “As of now, the plan is for vendors to set up to the right side of the concession stand and customer parking on the left (when facing the screen). We are asking everyone to please be respectful of the neighbors’ property, including the campground (which is private property), by parking/walking on the Midway grounds only and cleaning up after themselves.”
