LEWISTOWN -- On the heels of a recent contribution to Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital supplementing the maternity ward wing at the hospital facility, Drs. Rajeshwar and Shashpal Malhotra and family gifted their property at 18 North Main Street to Downtown Lewistown Inc.
In donating the commercial office building, the Malhotra's remarked that "the Lewistown community has been very good to us and we have enjoyed providing our patients with quality care for the 45 years we were in practice. The gifting of the property is just another way we could show our appreciation."
Downtown Lewistown Inc. President Jon Zimmerman stated that "this gift is a magnanimous contribution from the Malhotra family and is greatly welcomed by the entire Board of Directors of DLI." Executive Director Jim Zubler added that "as a 501(c) 3 charitable corporation, Downtown Lewistown, Inc. can accept donations of real property and channel these contributions into projects that have long standing value to the community."
Jon Zimmerman added that "DLI has received tremendous support from municipalities, businesses, Mifflin County, MCIDC, State Government, Greater Lewistown Corporation, and many individuals to fund and sustain DLI's existence. This gift is evidence that the work we do can have an impact in making Mifflin County better. We are fortunate to have outstanding leadership in key positions throughout our county that makes this progress happen. Thank you to everyone who has supported DLI."
Geisinger also recognized the Malhotras, who retired in 2021 after serving patients in Mifflin County for 45 years, for making the donation to the hospital's women's clinic.
"This community has given us so much and we felt that we must do something for the community in return," Raj said.
The Malhotras continue to stay active. They enjoy ballroom dancing, golfing, taking walks, and playing bridge and tennis.
And they don't have plans to move. "We're happy here," Raj said. "We had a good feeling going in, and a good feeling going out."
