LEWISTOWN -- The Barr Funeral Home now has a new owner and a new name.
Stephen D. King, who has worked at Barr Funeral Home for the past six years, is now the owner of what will now be known as King-Barr Funeral Home in Lewistown.
King is the son of Joyce (Long) King, and the late Douglas C. King, and is newly engaged to Morgan T. Lutz.
He graduated from Lewistown Area High School in 2009 and The Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in 2012.
King began his work in the funeral industry alongside his father at Heller-Hoenstine and Hoenstine Funeral Homes until 2014 when he began his employment at Barr Funeral Home. King is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Lewistown, the Mifflin County Sportsman's Club, the Lewistown Country Club, attends Walnut Street United Methodist Church in Burnham and is treasurer of The Juniata Valley Funeral Directors Association.
Barr Funeral Home is one the area's oldest funeral homes dating back to 1841. Roger G. Barr had been the owner and funeral director since 1977 when he took over after his father William A. Barr passed away.
"Stephen has been working alongside me for the past six years," Barr said. "I am pleased to announce that he will be taking over the funeral home and continuing to provide the care to the families of this community. I am confident that he will continue in the tradition of caring for all families and loved ones as if they were his own. We have always said we are one family serving yours and I have no doubt Stephen will continue that legacy."
Although Barr is retiring, he plans to help at the funeral home on a part-time basis.
"I will never take for granted the opportunity to serve this great community that has shaped me into the man that I am today," King said. "I hope to carry on the heritage of the Barr Funeral Home and provide an unparalleled level of service to every family we serve through an unwavering commitment to this area for my lifetime.
