Penn State Extension to offer ‘Blueberry 101’ webinar series
UNIVERSITY PARK — Interested in learning about blueberry production? Penn State Extension will hold the “Blueberry 101” webinar series from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, from Sept. 30 to Oct. 21.
This four-part series is aimed at new and experienced blueberry growers, small-fruit growers, small-fruit crop consultants, and small-fruit educators.
Leading experts will share research-based strategies for managing common challenges in blueberry cultivation. Participants can learn current options for managing insect, weed and disease pests and the role of proper fertility and nutrition in productive blueberry crops.
The Sept. 30 session will focus on disease management with Bill Cline, researcher and extension specialist at North Carolina State University.
The Oct. 7 webinar will cover insect management with Rufus Isaacs, professor and berry crops entomology extension specialist at Michigan State University.
Weed pest management will be the focus of the Oct. 14 session with Thierry E. Besançon, associate professor and extension weed specialist for specialty crops at Rutgers University.
The Oct. 21 webinar will explore fertility and nutrition with Kathy Demchak, senior extension associate with Penn State Extension.
This series will provide essential tools to support vigorous, high-yielding blueberry crops, organizers noted.
For participants who attend the full series, eight Pennsylvania pesticide applicator recertification credits are available in each of the following categories: private, 02 and 18. Participants also can earn various credits from Delaware and Maryland.
The registration deadline is 11:45 p.m. Sept. 29. The registration fee is $40.
