Pa. hog inventory up 3%

HARRISBURG -- Pennsylvania inventory of all hogs and pigs on Sept. 1, 2024, was 1.48 million head. This was up 3% from Sept. 1, 2023, and up 3% from June 1, 2024, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report.

Breeding inventory at 155,000 head was up 7% from last year, and up 7% the previous quarter.

Market hog inventory at 1.33 million head was up 2% from last year, and up 3% from last quarter.

The June to August 2024 pig crop at 605,000 head was up slightly from 2023. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 50,000 head, down 4% from 2023. The average pigs saved per litter was 12.1 for the June-August period, up 4% from last year.
