U.S. and Northeast dairy products
summary
Total U.S. cheese production for 2023, excluding cottage cheeses, was
14.2 billion pounds, 0.9% above 2022 production. Wisconsin was the leading State with 24.7% of the production. Butter production in the United States during 2023 totaled 2.12 billion pounds, 2.7% above 2022. California was the leading state in Butter production with 32.2% of the production.
Pennsylvania
Total cheese production in Pennsylvania, excluding cottage cheese, was 467 million pounds, up 4% from 2022. Italian varieties, with 276 million pounds, were up slightly from 2022 production and accounted for 59% of total Pennsylvania cheese in 2023. Mozzarella accounted for 82% of the Italian production, at 226 million pounds, down slightly from 2022. Swiss cheese production was 7.33 million pounds, 4% below 2022 production.
Sour cream production during 2023 totaled
2.35 million pounds, down 7% from last year. Butter production during 2023
totaled 86.9 million pounds, down 3% from 2022. Pennsylvania accounted for 4% of the United States production. Nonfat dry milk (human) production totaled 170 million pounds, down 3% from the previous year.
Ice cream mix, regular production totaled
18.7 million gallons, 12% below 2022. Low-fat ice cream production, at
9.14 million gallons, was up from 4.38 million gallons in 2022. Ice cream mix, lowfat production totaled 6.58 million gallons, up 31% from the previous year. Sherbet mix production was up 22% in 2023, at 714 thousand gallons.
Northeast cash
receipts summary
Total 2023 cash receipts from marketings of meat animals increased 10% to $128 billion. Cattle and calves accounted for 79% of this total and hogs and pigs accounted for 21%.
The 2023 gross income from cattle and calves and hogs and pigs for the United States totaled
$129 billion, up 10% from 2022. Gross income increased 17% for cattle and calves but decreased 11% for hogs and pigs from previous year’s gross income.
Total 2023 production of cattle and calves and hogs and pigs for the United States totaled 86.6 billion pounds, up slightly from 2022. Production decreased 4% for cattle and calves but increased 5% for hogs and pigs.
Pennsylvania
Total 2023 cash receipts from marketings of meat animals increased 8% to $1.20 billion. Cattle and calves accounted for 70% of this total and hogs and pigs accounted for 30%.
Cash receipts from marketings of cattle and calves increased 19% from
$707 million in 2022 to
$839 million in 2023. All cattle and calf marketings totaled 495 million pounds in 2023, down 5% from 2022.
Cash receipts from hogs and pigs totaled $360 million during 2023, down 10% from 2022. Marketings total 559 million pounds in 2023, down 1% from 2022.
The 2023 gross income from cattle and calves and hogs and pigs for Pennsylvania totaled $1.23 billion, up 9% from 2022. Gross income increased 19% for cattle and calves but decreased 10% for hogs and pigs from previous year’s gross income.
Total 2023 production of cattle and calves and hogs and pigs for Pennsylvania totaled 1.05 billion pounds, up slightly from 2022. Production decreased 1% for cattle and calves but increased 2% for hogs and pigs.
Pennsylvania
apple production
Pennsylvania’s utilized apple production in 2023 totaled 545 million pounds, up 19% from 2022. Bearing acreage was estimated at 18,500, down 5% from the previous year. The average yield was estimated at 29,900 pounds per acre, up 6,300 pounds from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 280 million pounds were for the fresh market and 264 million pounds were for processing. The value of the crop totaled $132 million, up 6% from the previous season, with an average annual price of 24.2¢ cents per pound.
