HARRISBURG -- The total value of fish sales received by trout growers in Pennsylvania totaled $7.39 million for 2023, a slight increase from 2022. Pennsylvania accounted for 7% of the total value of fish sold in the United States, ranking Pennsylvania third nationally behind Idaho and North Carolina, according to Charles E. Butler, Acting Regional Director of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Northeastern Regional Office.
The number of trout 12 inches and longer sold during 2023 totaled 870 thousand fish, down 20% from the previous year. The average price per pound was $5.30, up 87 cents from 2022. The value of sales for the 2023 marketing year was $6.25 million, up 5% from 2022.
Distributed trout
Trout distributed for restoration, conservation, enhancement, or recreational purposes, primarily by State and Federal hatcheries, included 5.93 million 6″- 12″ fish. The estimated value of fish distributed totaled $13.4 million, down 20% from 2022.
Trout losses
Total losses of all trout intended for sale were found to be 571,000 fish during 2023.
