Northeast dairy products summary
Total U.S. cheese production for 2022, excluding cottage cheeses, was 14.1 billion pounds, 2.2% above 2021 production. Wisconsin was the leading State with 25.0% of the production. Butter production in the United States during 2022 totaled 2.06 billion pounds, 0.2% below 2021. California was the leading state in Butter production with 33.3% of the production.
Pennsylvania
Total cheese production in Pennsylvania, excluding cottage cheese, was 451 million pounds, up 5% from 2021. Italian varieties, with 276 million pounds, were up slightly from 2021 production and accounted for 61% of total Pennsylvania cheese in 2021. Mozzarella accounted for 82% of the Italian production, at 226 million pounds, 1% above 2021. Swiss cheese production was 7.64 million pounds, 4% above 2021 production.
Sour cream production during 2022 totaled 2.52 million pounds, up 7% from last year. Butter production during 2022 totaled 89.7 million pounds, up slightly from 2021. Pennsylvania accounted for 4% of the United States production. Nonfat dry milk (human) production totaled 174 million pounds, up slightly from the previous year.
Ice cream, regular (hard) production totaled 35.9 million gallons, down 5% from 2021. Ice cream mix, regular production totaled 21.2 million gallons, 20% below 2021. Low-fat ice cream production, at 6.46 million gallons, was 25% below the 2021 production level. Ice cream mix, lowfat production totaled 5.03 million gallons, slightly above 2021. Sherbet mix production was down 9% in 2022, at 584 thousand gallons.

Total 2022 production of cattle and calves and hogs and pigs for the United States totaled 86.3 billion pounds, up slightly from 2021. Production decreased 1% for cattle and calves but increased 1% for hogs and pigs.
Total 2022 cash receipts from marketings of meat animals increased 16% to $117 billion. Cattle and calves accounted for 74% of this total and hogs and pigs accounted for 26%.
The 2022 gross income from cattle and calves and hogs and pigs for the United States totaled $117 billion, up 16% from 2021. Gross income increased 18% for cattle and calves and 9% for hogs and pigs from previous year's gross income.
Pennsylvania
Total 2022 cash receipts from marketings of meat animals increased 5% to $1.11 billion. Cattle and calves accounted for 64% of this total and hogs and pigs accounted for 36%.
Cash receipts from marketings of cattle and calves increased 9% from $647 million in 2021 to $704 million in 2022. All cattle and calf marketings totaled 517 million pounds in 2022, down 9% from 2021.
Cash receipts from hogs and pigs totaled $403 million during 2022, down 1% from 2021. Marketings total 571 million pounds in 2022, down 6% from 2021.
The 2022 gross income from cattle and calves and hogs and pigs for Pennsylvania totaled $1.13 billion, up 6% from 2021. Gross income increased 10% for cattle and calves but decreased 1% for hogs and pigs from previous year's gross income.
Total 2022 production of cattle and calves and hogs and pigs for Pennsylvania totaled 1.05 billion pounds, down 2% from 2021. Production decreased slightly for cattle and calves and decreased 4% for hogs and pigs.
Pennsylvania apple production
Pennsylvania's utilized apple production in 2022 totaled 412 million pounds, down 26% from 2021. Bearing acreage was estimated at 17,500, down 8% from the previous year. The average yield was estimated at 23,600 pounds per acre, down 5,700 pounds from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 193 million pounds were for the fresh market and 219 million pounds were for processing. The value of the crop totaled $112 million, down 14% from the previous season, with an average annual price of 27.1 cents per pound. In the Commonwealth State, a spring frost led to lower yields than last year but overall, the crop was decent.
