LEWISTOWN — If you think all banquets are just sit-down dinners with monotone speakers, then you’ve never attended a Big Valley FFA Banquet.

They served a delicious dinner and did have a guest speaker at the May 5 event – Colleen Filson, who achieved the gold standard American FFA Degree, which she received during the 95th National FFA Convention and Expo at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind., in October – but it also proved to be an education learning experience for FFA members.

The FFA banquet was held at the Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology in Lewistown

“The banquet was an amazing opportunity for the members,” said Susan Wagner, FFA advisor and Agriculture Education teacher at the Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology. “They worked so hard organizing and preparing the canned food drive, labeling door prizes, practicing the script, decorating the facility, welcoming guests and encouraging one another over the last year.

“The members of this organization are like a family,” she added.

FFA members donated more than 250 canned food and non-perishable items.

“They look out for each other, are active in helping the community and grow and learn as they participate in events all year long,” Wagner said.

Members certainly stand by the FFA motto: “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live and Living to Serve.”

In addition to the banquet, Big Valley FFA members worked with residents at Celebration Villa in Reedsville, on Friday, May 12. While at Celebration Villa, the students split into two groups.

The first group helped residents plant flowers and prepare flower beds, while the other half of the chapter prepped a raised flower bed for vegetables that the residents plan to grow.

“The members were engaged in this learning experience and were so proud and excited to be helping members of our community,” Wagner explained.

FFA members will also be showing animals at the Mifflin County Youth Fair in August.
