PORT ROYAL -- Steve Long of Mifflin was honored as the 2022 Farmer of the Year at the Juniata County Fair.

Long, at the age of 20, took over the family dairy farm due to the death of his father, Darwin Long.

One of many nominees for the award, Long was nominated by his daughter, Shelbylyn Kilmer, and Rachel Barton.

Long has three children, Shelbylyn, Tyler and Travis, to his first wife, Cindy. In 2002 after Cindy's death from cancer, Long married his current wife Lori and became a stepfather to Dusty Amtower and Miranda Fowler.

Steve and Lori will celebrate their 20-year anniversary in October.

A few years ago, Long and his son stepped in to help neighbor Delmar Zimmerman, who was in need of assistance on his dairy farm. The men would milk Delmar's cows at 4:30 a.m. before milking the cows on their own farm. Long continues to help Delmar by planting and harvesting crops, spraying the fields and dealing with mechanical issues.

Long is a father, son, brother, husband and grandfather who enjoys teaching his grandsons about farming. He values family and friends, works very hard and helps everyone in need.
