Dolly is ‘on call’ in her new home

For those of you who read the Creature Feature regularly, you may recall the article I wrote about Hope, the toothless, hairless, skinny older cat I adopted from the Humane Society. That was in the spring of 2025. She became a gentle, loving member of our family. Sadly, Hope succumbed to a severe gingivitis infection this past August. To ease my heartache, the Humane Society invited me to meet Mia, a young long-haired gray cat with bright greenish-yellow eyes and a really big attitude. Of course, you know the outcome. A few days later Mia came home with me. It was the day after Dolly Parton died. That is important because when I introduced Mia to my husband, he said, "Nope, her name is now Dolly."

So let me tell you about Dolly. She is a whirlwind kitty who is very good at zoomies, usually at 2 a.m. She loves belly rubs. She lets me pick her up and hug her any time I want. Never once has she complained about my neediness. She keeps her older dog brother in line so that he doesn't take up too much room on "her" bed. You know, the bed that her people try to find room on.

Dolly is on call from 9 to 5 every day. Laundry needs attention? Dolly is sitting on the dryer making sure everything meets her high standards. Dog needs to be fed? Dolly is in high alert mode at my feet pointing out that I dropped a bite of dog food. She doesn't eat it. She just looks at it and then glares at me. Pick it up. Now!

Dolly also is a dedicated security cat. If Dolly is missing I simply check out the windowsills. She is certain to be lying on one of them keeping an eye out for a squirrel, a chipmunk, a falling leaf, or more likely, dreaming about them.

There's never been a toy that Dolly doesn't like. Rolling balls, catnip stuffies, shoelaces, anything can be considered a toy when she is in the mood. Like the zoomies, toys become high priority before the sun rises.

I could go on and on but let me end with this. It was very hard to lose Hope. She will always be with me in spirit. But Dolly is so sweet, loving and playful that my heart is full again. Loving another cat doesn't mean forgetting about the one who came before. It just means your heart grows bigger to make room for another furry baby. Huntingdon County Humane Society is full of furry babies. Drop by and see for yourself.
