Reading, storytime and Goose Day

At Mifflin County Library, the middle of September is when we start thinking about storytime registration for the Fall.

Does your child sit still all the time and love to be read to? Yes? Then we want you for story time.

Does your child sit still all the time and love to be read to? No? Then we want you for story time, too. Story time isn't just about sitting still and listening to stories. It's about the time together, you and your child or children. It's about singing songs together. It's about your child making friends with other children, making crafts, and having fun in a warm and safe environment while you, the parent, make friends as well. But it is also about great books.

Parents will learn while Miss Kelly and Miss Erin model good reading skills during story time. After all, story time builds critical early literacy, boosts vocabulary and nurtures emotional intelligence in children. Regular shared reading fosters a lifelong love of learning.

Storytime is for small children from birth to pre-kindergarten (so, five-year-olds who are not in kindergarten are welcome), with the first session beginning Tuesday, Oct. 6. Normally, storytime runs for five weeks but with construction we may need to be flexible. Registration for story time is required and starts on Monday, Sept. 14. The registration form can be found on the library's website. Storytime is funded by United Way of Mifflin-Juniata.

The middle of September also means we are thinking about Goose Day. The Children’s Library will have two goose-themed offerings beginning on Sept. 14 as well.

The first is Lucky Goose magnet Take and Make craft for children. This craft is free to the children in our community and is made possible through funding from United Way of Mifflin-Juniata. You can pick up one of these crafts at MCL in Lewistown on Monday or Kish Library in Belleville starting on Tuesday. This program continues until all the magnets are gone.

The second Goose Day offering at Mifflin County Library is something very different called Adopt-a-Goose. MCL in Lewistown will have goose adoptions beginning on Monday (and at Kish Library in Belleville beginning on Tuesday). With a $5 donation to the Children’s Library an individual will choose a stuffed goose from the flock, receive an adoption certificate and go home with a darling little goose that will bring luck and love for years to come. This program continues until all geese have found new homes.

There will be lots of other Goose Day events in September throughout the county and Mifflin County Library is proud to be part of this exciting tradition. You may already know that Goose Day is celebrated every year on Sep. 29. This year, Sept. 29 is also the first day of storytime. I wonder if Miss Kelly will have goosey stories? Eating goose on Goose Day is supposed to bring lots of good luck, but I think eating a chocolate goose or wearing a Goose Day button or reading a story about a goose brings just as much luck.
