A summer drive in the country (for corn and thrills)

When Tom Laub asked the staff at The Sentinel if they wanted to write about a favorite summer memory, my mind quickly went to my childhood and it was very difficult to choose just one. I have tried to pare it down, but apparently, based upon our submissions for our ‘I Remember When’ publication, everyone else had a problem choosing just one.

Let me tell you about the first thing I thought of. I grew up in Lewistown and I fondly remember trips to get corn from local farms. We often frequented farms near the industrial park near the current Walmart. On the way back from the farm, we typically took Middle Road where there is a small hill. My mother would drive a little faster than normal and we would giggle with glee as we drove over the hump. Our stomachs would feel like they were dropping. To my brother and I, it was like a little roller coaster ride. Many years later, my mother would take my son over the same little bump and he had the same joyous laugh. It was a simple pleasure etched into my memory…my mother, brother and I riding in the car with the windows down, the radio playing, enjoying the day and the time together as we rode over the hump that was as good as a ride at an amusement park and something that I will never forget. The corn we ate later was an added bonus to the summer day.

Starting at $3.75/week.
