Libby updates

Digital books, which are books you can read or listen to on a tablet, smartphone, or computer, are free to you with your Juniata County Library card. Why pay for your digital books, either per book or through a subscription, when you can get them for free? Simply use your Juniata or Mifflin County library card to download the Libby app.

There are some updates related to Libby that I'd like to highlight:

New PIN/Password requirement coming in October

On Thursday, Oct. 15, Libby will prompt JCL users to enter their pin/password along with their library card. This will not be required every time the app is used, but it will be required on a new device or if it’s been a long time since it was last used.

When we create your library card, we set the PIN/password to the last four digits of your barcode. If your card was created years ago, the PIN may have been randomly generated. If you are unsure what your pin/password is, let us know. We can reset it for you by phone or in person. You can also reset it on our website.

Magazines in Libby

Our Libby subscription gives you access to thousands of free magazines. You can find magazines like The New Yorker, National Geographic, Good Housekeeping, and many more, all accessed through the Libby app right alongside the eBooks and eAudiobooks you already love.

No wait lists for over 1,000 Romance books

Libby has over 1,700 no-wait eBooks available. Their No Wait Romance Reads can be accessed here: https://centralpalibraries.overdrive.com/centralpalibraries-schlow/content/collection/1680244.

Only residents of Central PA District can use their JCL card on Libby

Juniata County Library cards with an address outside of our district (Juniata, Mifflin, Centre, Clearfield counties) cannot access Libby. Electronic resources are expensive, and wait times for our patrons for the most popular titles are long. Given that, we must prioritize residents of our district, whose taxes help pay for library services through their local municipalities. New bestselling eBooks can cost between $45 and $65 per item, and digital audiobooks can cost between $45 and $120 per item, meaning we can purchase far fewer digital copies of popular items than we can in print.

Four statewide resource libraries receive special funding to provide service to the entire state (Free Library of Philadelphia, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, State Library in Harrisburg and Penn State University Libraries – all campuses). Residents who want to access additional print and digital resources should contact these libraries or visit their websites to learn how to get a library card and what materials they can access.

Book of the week!

If you are going to read one book, give this one a try...

I Survived the Night of the Lions (I Survived #26) by Lauren Tarshis

(New kids fiction: action/adventure, animals, Africa) 144 pages for ages 8-12.

In a nutshell: This contemporary adventure takes the "I Survived" series into new territory.

After sustaining a severe injury in a baseball game, Dylan James heads to Botswana with his sister Maya, a social media influencer. They meet up with Dr. Tiro Seema, a scientist studying lions in the Okavango Delta. Maya and Dylan record Dr. Seema and his helpers at work, including helping the pride’s male lion after he gets injured in a wire snare. As in all the series entries, Dylan and his sister end up in a life-or-death situation when the plane they are leaving in strikes a bird and goes down. Dylan seeks water at night, where he is attacked by a lion. This exciting adventure follows the pattern of information blended with intense action that keeps the story moving. The back matter includes the author's experience in Botswana, along with additional information about the need to protect wildlife in Botswana and other places in Africa.

Bottom line: Dylan’s days in the wilds of Botswana are filled with awe and wonder, until disaster strikes.
