The five useful databases that you need to try out

What the library has to offer goes beyond just print books. We have many great books available in digital format for free! Check out our website and see what online resources are always available to you. Let’s look at the databases you can use with a Juniata County library card! Start on our website: https://www.juniatalibrary.org/programs-services/digital-resources On our website under the Ask Us Anything section, I made videos showing you how to use each of these databases.

Cybersmarts. This is a great resource for families to use by educating youth on using the internet. It includes eBooks, lessons, quizzes, and activities for avoiding cyber predators and social bullying as well as safely playing games online, protecting your privacy and using social media sites. This information is valuable and relevant to all ages.

EBSCOhost. Do you need a place to obtain research for a school assignment? You can search for thousands of eBooks, academic journal articles, magazines, images, and more! You are able to narrow down your search results to a publication date range as many classes require you to use resources from the last few years. Next, you can view the full text of your result and jump to a chapter or section, cite the source, and export it to Google Drive and other services. This is a gold mine for quality reference materials.

Business Insights Essentials. This is a great database for looking up trustworthy and up-to-date information about different business fields such as industries or companies. I searched for dairy and was able to see full information on the number of dairy companies there are worldwide, magazine and journal articles about the industry, narrow down the results to those mentioning Pennsylvania, and easily get a citation for each resource.

Small Engine Repair Reference Center. This database provides detailed repair guides for all types of small engines and resources that support routine maintenance (tune-ups, brake service) and extensive repairs such as engine and transmission disassembly. You are able to search for walk-behind mowers and weed trimmers and search by brand or a specific model and see their full manual as a PDF. You can print or download the PDF, too! These manuals are hard to find online. The manuals show detailed information with graphics. You can check what type of oil and gas you should use with them, information on the spark plug, and more. With spring yard work coming soon, you need to check this resource out.

Auto Repair Source. This database offers accurate, authoritative and up-to-date service and repair information for thousands of domestic and imported vehicles. You can pull up the information on a car and can see images and information that are useful for ongoing maintenance, repairs, or simply understanding things such as the diagnostic trouble codes. You are able to look up what maintenance is needed based on the mileage range, such as what should be done at 50,000 miles. You can even easily print what you are viewing so you can take it with you out to the garage.

Book of the week!

If you are going to read one book, give this one a try…

One of Us Is Back (book #3 in Bayview High series) by Karen M. McManus

(New young adult fiction: mystery, high school)

In a nutshell: A new game is starting in Bayview…but no one knows the rules in this latest installment in McManus’ bestselling Bayview High series.

After all they’ve endured, the Bayview Crew–made up of the original Bayview Four (Nate, Bronwyn, Cooper, and Addy); their successors (Maeve, Phoebe, and Knox); Cooper’s boyfriend, Kris; and Maeve’s boyfriend, Luis–attempt to move on with their lives. But Jake (Addy’s ex who tried to frame her for murder and almost killed her himself) has been released from jail and might even get a new trial. When a digital billboard in town ominously announces, “TIME FOR A NEW GAME, BAYVIEW,” the crew becomes vigilant, clinging to one another–because if they’ve learned anything since Simon’s death two years ago, it’s that everyone has secrets, and everyone is a target. While McManus, as expected, succeeds at engaging readers in another thrilling mystery, she focuses much attention on various characters’ challenges as they grow: Nate is determined to make himself worthy of Bronwyn’s love; Phoebe struggles to accept Knox’s affections while holding onto the secret of her brother’s involvement in Jared’s revenge on Addy’s brother-in-law; Addy must learn how to live in a world where she may have to encounter Jake again (despite the restraining order). And even from the grave Simon continues to have an impact on the community. Main characters read White; an earlier title describes Bronwyn and Maeve as Colombian American.

Bottom line: A satisfying and hopeful closer in a masterful trilogy. For those who enjoyed the Pretty Little Liars series, this book is for you.
