Family boundaries and paths to healing

Dear Annie: I have a very toxic and narcissistic sister-in-law. Despite years of unpleasant family problems caused by her, my husband and his brother (her siblings) feel obligated to stay in contact with her. Now that their parents have passed away, I had hoped we could reduce this contact even further. The issue has become more pressing as our daughter is getting married. She does not want to invite her aunt or cousins due to how they’ve treated her in the past, and I fully support her decision. However, I know this will cause conflict with my husband, who may insist on including ...

Milroy chosen as site for PennDOT commercial vehicles chain-up project

MILROY — A pilot project for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) that requires commercial vehicle drivers to fasten their tire traction chains for the upcoming winter season will be located along Route 322 in Mifflin County. PennDOT announced its plan for the project, which is geared to improve winter operations and reduce the likelihood of extensive road closures due to commercial vehicles getting stuck on vertical grades during winter weather events. They are targeting a pair of routes with mountainous terrain. One of the sites is in Milroy, which is along ...

Prediabetic patient doesn’t necessarily need medication

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a healthy 63-year-old woman. I walk or do the elliptical four to five times per week for 30 to 40 minutes, and I also do strength training at the gym three times per week. I eat most of my meals at home, and I eat mostly healthy –– daily salads, fruits, fish and chicken. Although I do go out to eat on weekends and enjoy some snacking, I am maintaining a 30-pound weight loss since 2018 and weigh 149 pounds at 5 feet, 7 inches. In November 2022, my A1C came in at 5.7 percent, and my glucose level was 124 mg/dL (although I had not fasted for those tests). My ...

Dear Heloise: As the director of the Siouxland Humane Society in Sioux City, Iowa, I was happy to see the tips on animal shelters written by Susan R. from Missoula, Montana. However, it mentions using old rugs or blankets inside these shelters. Although I’m sure that this is well-meaning, it is a huge “no!” Rugs, blankets, towels and similar items get wet easily from the rain, snow and wind, then end up freezing. So, they do not protect or keep an animal warm, and the animal could freeze to death. Straw is best as it resists wetness, keeps the shelter warm, and has good ...

Garden cleanup no fall chore

Cleaning up the garden — or “putting the garden to bed” — has traditionally been a fall endeavor. In recent years, however, as information about the migrating or hibernating habits of birds, pollinators and other beneficial wildlife has seeped into the mainstream, many gardeners are postponing their big cleanups until spring. And that’s a good thing. But there are quite a few tasks that still should be tended to now. Some are holdovers from the old protocol; others are new ways of tackling conventional chores that have evolved with our better understanding of the ...
