You’re not a polar bear: The plunge into the cold water comes with risks

By Laura Williamson American Heart Association News Jumping into icy cold water in the dead of winter might seem like a crazy idea, but the so-called polar bear plunge has become a popular activity, often paired with raising money for charity. Boosting its allure is another anything-but-hot trend, the practice of cold therapy, based on the belief that exposing the body to cold water and air may strengthen the immune system and improve cardiovascular health. The offering represented a reverent act of thanksgiving, the 45-year-old explained, and a desire to forge a divine connection with the animals, his ancestors and the Creator. “When tobacco is used in the right way, it’s almost like a contract is made between you and ...

FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. (AP) — Holly Fussell’s face lights up when she talks about outdoor adventures available in and around Fayetteville and the New River Gorge. That hasn’t always been the case, though. “It wasn’t an immediate love affair,” Fussell admits with a laugh. The Georgia native was introduced to the area in 2004 by her husband Chris, who had begun rock climbing years earlier. “We were living in Norfolk at the time,” she said, explaining the family “bounced” around for many years for Chris’ career in the U.S. Navy. “I’ve always been athletic, but ...
