They served so we could live free

They’ve never asked for thanks, but they’ve earned it a thousand times over. Every parade, every flag raised, every quiet moment of freedom enjoyed on a Monday morning exists because, somewhere, someone once stood between danger and home. Veterans Day isn’t a gift to them; it’s a reminder to the rest of us. Across Mifflin and Juniata counties, you’ll find them everywhere—men and women who wore the uniform and came home to build lives, families, and towns that still depend on their quiet strength. They don’t ask for recognition. They don’t boast about their service. But ...

At the Mifflin County Library, there are many exciting things happening. Book group meets each month and is for grown-ups. The November Book is “The Book of Lost Friends” by Lisa Wingate. If you are interested in joining book group, come even if you haven’t read the book. “The Book of Lost Friends” is a historical fiction novel about three young women in search of family members after the destruction and displacement of the Civil War. When we pray, begin with God

Luke 13-1-10 Jesus begins with God. That’s where we too must begin. God knows our needs. He is the source of our life. He is our hope for a better life. He is the Lord of all creation. Only after Christ has focused our attention on God and His kingdom and His will does he turn to our needs. “Give us each day our daily bread.” It’s interesting how much Jesus had to say about our physical needs in only one line. That’s all. Here again is why so much of our prayer life is ineffective. You and I probably spend most of our prayer time on our physical needs. Yet Jesus ...

Readers' opinions

Control anger without sin To the Editor: Anger by definition is wrath, the filling and expression of strong displeasure and hostility. Anger itself is not sinful but needs to be carefully watched and soon suppressed. I find in God’s word that He expresses anger and wrath. It is holy and just indignation against sin (Rom. 1:18). For God cannot sin, for He is holy and perfect in all that He does (Duet. 32:4; Job 34:10; Ps. 5:4, 145:17). In His word I find He is angry with the wicked everyday (Ps. 5:5, 7:11). He is also angry when His chosen people are disobedient to Him (Isa. ...

Family caregivers should be recognized

Among the many other designations for November is National Family Caregivers Month — a time to recognize the role played by those who sometimes jeopardize their own long-term financial, physical and mental well-being to instead care for a loved one in need. According to data from AARP West Virginia, approximately 26% of Mountain State adults fall into the category of being a family caregiver. These people are often unpaid — and on their own — taking care of older parents, spouses and others for whom no one else has stepped up. In fact, AARP estimates there is approximately ...

Deer decoys can be productive

For some people, autumn includes decorating with items like leaves and pumpkins. While I enjoy fall as much as the next guy, my idea of decorations leans more toward the deer-decoy type. Decoys can be a productive strategy at any time of the season. The best time to deploy them is during the rut or the immediate run-up to it. For me, the best time to decoy deer is from the second week in October until the end of bow season. Why this time? Because this is when young bucks are starting to sow their oats, bigger bucks are looking to stake out a territory and then move right into prime ...
