Borrow a mobile hotspot from the library

*Correction: in a recent article about the Friends of the Library I mistakenly said that there will be a kayak raffle coming up. There will not be a kayak raffle. Did you know that you can borrow a mobile hotspot from the library? If you hadn’t heard, we lend out these small devices that when turned on give you Wi-Fi for any of your devices (as long as there is cell phone service where you use it.) Because they are so popular and widely used, we currently lend out 33 of them. Here are some frequently asked questions we receive in relation to the hotspots: What is a mobile hotspot? ...

Don’t worry! Be thankful!

Matthew 6:25-34 It’s amazing how many things we can find to stress us out, even at Thanksgiving. Or maybe, for those who are responsible for cooking for a large family or those who are entertaining relatives, we find ways to stress out especially at Thanksgiving. While visiting her parents for Thanksgiving, one woman found that her mother was determined to put on a traditional dinner, even though she was over 80. After having spent the day preparing all the food, her mother was getting ready for bed. Her daughter noticed her mother had set her alarm clock to go off at 4 a.m. ...

Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift

Thanksgiving is a time set aside to remind us to be a thankful people. What do we have to be thankful about? What is the one thing that God gives us that will never be taken away, will never decrease in its value or power, will never change nor vary? There is a magnificent word that is used in the N.T. 155 times. It is the word ‘car-is’. It is translated, “grace.” It means a favor bestowed. It means a generous benefit freely given. It means a benevolent power that applies the goodness of God and the resources of God to our lives. It is a dynamic force. It is by grace we are ...

Thanksgiving dinner with plenty of pies

Hello from the kitchen! It’s time to start planning our Thanksgiving dinner. Growing up, we had the traditional turkey, filling, etc. I enjoy the traditional meal but I’m all for trying new things, too. My idea of a tasty turkey is stuffing it with apples, oranges, celery, onions and lots of fresh herbs. It’ll liven up the broth. My focus of course is on the desserts. Pies are my family’s dessert of choice for thanksgiving so I’ll be making pumpkin crumb and pecan pies. If you are in need of any helpful hints prepping your meal, please message me on Facebook at Bev ...

Long awaited dream of ‘Mr. Marching Band’ becomes reality

Congratulations to the Mifflin County High School Huskies Marching Band. They brought home another state championship for their bulging trophy case and made us all very proud once again. As a former “band geek” from the late 1980s and early 1990s myself (that’s what we were affectionately called where I grew up in Maine), music has a special place in my heart. We should admire — and thank — the dedication that Mifflin County Director of Bands Art Belfiore, who I call “Mr. Marching Band,” music boosters and other supporters have shown in building up the program into a ...

Hauntings, sightings very frightening

Halloween, also known as All Hallows’ Eve, is just around the corner, and who can resist a good spine-tingling, hair-raising, ghost story? Especially, when it is a local one! Draw the shades, pull your blanket up a little tighter, and read on if you dare! Our spooky tale takes place in the sleepy little village of Academia in the heart of Juniata County, not far from the historic Pomeroy Academia Covered Bridge. There you will find, just beyond the Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Church and cemetery, the now vacant spot where once stood a striking, 1800s, Gothic style building. This ...
