Juniata duo shares honor for top tee

MIFFLINTOWN -- Organizers of the Juniata County's annual Envirothon had a problem: They couldn't pick one winner for their recent t-shirt design contest.
Creatively, they figured it out by coming up with a unique solution. Two Juniata High School students - senior Aidan Gardner and junior Dan Shearer - were both declared winners of the contest.
Gardner's design is going on the back of the t-shirt for this year's environmental education competition, while Shearer's will be on the front.
"I was happy with that," Juniata High School art teacher Rachel Shepler said. "Those two (logos) really worked well together.
"They had a pollinator heroes theme, so I saw a lot of bees, bats and butterflies. It's hard for the kids to come up with ideas when it's so completely open like that."
Both students, along with their teacher, posed for
a photo on Thursday.
The Juniata Envirothon, sponsored by the Juniata County Conservation District, will be held Wednesday. The event is held for senior high students to test their problem-solving, team building and leadership skills. Students compete in field testing using their knowledge in five topic areas, including soils and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife and environmental issues.
Envirothon is held across the state, and the winning team from each county qualifies for the state competition, and from there, goes to the North American competition.
It teaches students to learn, interpret and apply environmental, conservation and scientific principles to solve real natural resource and land-use problems.
Organizers were also looking for creative minds to design the t-shirt logo. Gardner and Shearer's designs were selected from 74 original designs from Shepler's four art classes.
Gardner, who will pursue a career in graphic design after graduating in May, came up a superhero-themed bee with the Envirothon title above the character.
Shearer's logo included a beehive hanging from a tree as well as a trail.
