PIAA punts on making fall sports decision

MECHANICSBURG — Following the continuation of its emergency meeting that began Thursday, the PIAA responded to Gov. Tom Wolf’s recommendation that sports be canceled until 2021.

Essentially, the sports agency sent the issue back to the governor for further review.

In its statement issued Friday, the PIAA said it believes the governor’s recommendation has potential negative impact on students and should be reconsidered. The board believes that STRICT ADHERENCE (PIAA’s emphasis) to the governor’s own guidance on sports will protect the students.

The PIAA continues to believe it can safely sponsor fall sports, the statement says, and has asked the governor and state legislators to weigh in, along with the state Departments of Health and Education.

Voluntary activity, following the guidance, may continue, the PIAA states. Mandatory fall sports activities are paused for two weeks, until the PIAA meets again on Aug. 21.
