Vermont victorious over State College
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Martin Figueroa knocked in a pair of runs with his first-inning single, but the State College Spikes fell to the Vermont Lake Monsters, 7-2, on Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Figueroa added a stolen base to his two-out, broken-bat single up the middle to give State College (22-23) a 2-0 lead in the opening frame.
However, Vermont (18-27) scored four runs in the third to take a lead it would not relinquish. Kyle McCann’s two-out, two-run triple was followed by RBI singles for both Marty Bechina and Lawrence Butler.
Logan Davidson’s solo homer to right in the fourth, his second of the year, and consecutive sacrifice flies in the ninth for Jorge Gordon and Marty Bechina added runs for the Lake Monsters.
Moises Castillo recorded the lone multi-hit game for the Spikes, who were held to five hits, all of them singles.
State College starter Enmanuel Solano (1-6) took the loss after yielding five runs, with only one of them earned, on nine hits and two walks over five innings. Solano also notched four strikeouts.
Vermont reliever Jorge Martinez (3-1) earned the win with three scoreless innings on the hill. Martinez allowed only one walk and one hit batsman while striking out five batters. Jeferson Mejia (4) got the save after recording the last five outs of the game, three via strikeout, while hitting one batter.
The Spikes will now look to salvage the final game of their three-game series with the Lake Monsters in a noon matchup on Thursday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. In a change to the rotation, right-hander Andre Pallante (1-0) will now get the ball for State College. Vermont is scheduled to send right-hander Jack Cushing (2-3) to the mound.
