Falcons soar past Huskies for key Mid-Penn victory
HERSHEY — Mifflin County football headed on a road trip to Chocolate World to take on Lower Dauphin for a Saturday morning in a Mid-Penn Conference Keystone Division clash at Hersheypark Stadium, in Hershey.
Mifflin County got off to a slow start without even playing a down. A costly offsides penalty on the kickoff gave the Falcons the option to have the Huskies re-kick the ball. The ball landed out of bounds, which gave Lower Dauphin the ball at its own 40.
It was a sign of things to come for the Huskies. Led by power back Hunter Strohm, who ended up rushing for 197 yards, Lower Dauphin knocked off Mifflin County, 35-26, on Saturday.
Lower Dauphin’s first drive amounted to Strohm getting the ball repeatedly. The Falcons scored on a 24-yard passing touchdown from Tyler Newman to Cohen Pollock to give the Falcons (5-3, 5-2 Mid Penn Conference Keystone Division) the early 7-0 advantage.
Mifflin County (4-4, 3-4 MPC) had some bright spots in the first half as quarterback Chase Hartung had 98 yards through the air, keeping Mifflin County in the game at 21-14.
The Falcons won the physical battle for much of the game. Mifflin County opened the second half with the ball but had two costly penalties – one being a delay of game on a fourth-down attempt with one yard to go. The Huskies went for it unsuccessfully, turning the ball back over to Lower Dauphin.
Huskies head coach Shane Breon said, “They have a physical team over there. They have been able to beat some of the top teams, and there’s a reason why they have been able to do that. I’m proud of our kids. We were able to move the ball. We put up a great fight and I’m proud of my guys.”
Brandon Kauffman rushed for 116 yards in defeat for the Huskies, which gave Mifflin County another 100-yard rushing effort for the third-straight week.
Mifflin County hosts Gettysburg Friday on senior night.
