Busy weekend got early start at Eldora, other tracks

PORT ROYAL – While it will be a busy weekend of sprint car racing in the mid-state, it has already been a busy week of racing in Ohio with many lucrative events.

It’s the beginning of the Month of Money for the sprint cars that ends with the Knoxville Nationals next month.

Kyle Larson won $100,000 in the 40-lap Joker’s Jackpot for the sprint cars Thursday night at Eldora Speedway in western Ohio.

Dillsburg’s Anthony Macri finished second. Macri, who recently clinched his third straight Pennsylvania Speedweek title, started 11th and raced his way to a second place finish, the best of his career there. He earned $25,000.

Rico Abreu, last year’s Tuscarora 50 Champion, led the first 21 laps before Larson got by following a restart.

Aaron Reutzel and Corey Day completed the top five. Abreu and Day were preliminary feature winners Wednesday night.

Sheldon Haudenschild, Garet Williamson, Brian Brown, Logan Schuchart and Jonestown’s Brock Zearfoss rounded out the top 10. Gettysburg’s Danny Dietrich also qualified for the feature, but didn’t finish.

Brent Marks and Chase Dietz were also in action, but didn’t qualify for the feature. Christopher Bell drove the Kreitz Racing 69K, but also didn’t make the feature. Ryan Smith will drive the car the rest of the weekend.

A very scary crash occurred on the opening lap involving Tyler Courtney, Bill Balog, Buddy Kofoid, Hunter Schuerenberg, Brad Sweet and Brady Bacon. Courtney was transported from the track, but positive reports about his condition were released Friday. All other drivers were okay.

The 42nd King’s Royal will be held at Eldora tonight with $200,000 going to the winner. Larson will be the favorite to pick ups his second crown. The first came in 2020, but the race was completed in 2021 as the event was not actually held in 2020 due to Covid.

Carson Macedo won the Brad Doty Classic Tuesday night at Attica Raceway Park, and his brother, Cole, won with the High Limit Racing Series Monday night at Fremont.

Port Royal Speedway returns to action tonight with three divisions of sprint cars. The 410s and 305s will be joined by the 358s for the first time in several seasons.

Last Saturday, it was Troy Wagaman Jr. winning the Jim Kline Tribute Race for his first career Port Royal win. Wagaman is having an excellent season in the Mike Heffner-owned No. 27. He leads the points at both Williams Grove and Lincoln Speedways. Wagaman set quick time at the Grove Friday night at 16.426.

Dylan Norris won the make-up 358 sprint car feature at the Grove Friday night. Andy Best, Brett Wanner, Scott Fisher and Nash Ely completed the top five.

Justin Whittall leads the sprint car points at Port Royal by 15 over Lance Dewease. Whittall was headed to victory in last week’s feature before a blown tire on the final lap ended his great run. Five-time champion Logan Wagner is 70 points back of the lead.

Macri has three Port Royal wins this season, and Ryan Smith has two. Chase Dietz, Michael Walter, Mike Wagner, Dewease, Logan Wagner, Brent Marks, Aaron Reutzel and Wagaman are sprint car feature winners this season.

Nick Sweigart is the 305 sprint car point leader by 45 points over Logan Spahr. Josh Spicer was last week’s feature winner.

Racing gets underway at 7 p.m.on First Responders Night.

The World of Outlaws return to central Pennsylvania Wednesday night at BAPS Motor Speedway and then onto Williams Grove for the annual Summer Nationals next weekend.

Starting at $2.99/week.
