Weekend racing slate washed out

PORT ROYAL — Mother Nature went undefeated once again cancelling all local dirt track racing over the weekend.

It was the sixth rainout of the season at Port Royal Speedway.

Williams Grove Speedway has lost an unprecedented 11 races out of the scheduled 16 this season.

It has been so bad at the Grove, the track is still looking to complete the 358 sprint car feature that was postponed by rain back on April 4.

At Port Royal, the Ron Zimmerman Memorial postponed last weekend will be made up sometime this season. A busy summer is ahead at both tracks, so hopefully the weekend weather begins to cooperate.

Justin Whittall, of Vincentown, N.J., leads the Port Royal sprint car point standings by 30 over six-time track champion Lance Dewease and 45 over 2017 track champion Brock Zearfoss. None of these drivers have visited victory lane yet in 2025. Whittall has finished third twice, while Dewease has a pair of runner-up finishes and Zearfoss has a best finish of second. Logan Wagner is fourth in points and the speedway’s most recent winner back on June 7. The five-time track champion sits only 65 points behind. Gerard McIntyre Jr. completes the top five in sprint car points.

One of the speedway’s most anticipated shows is this Saturday with the USAC Eastern Blast featuring the USAC wingless sprint cars and the USAC Silver Crown cars, plus Port’s regular winged 410 sprint cars.

The 14th Annual Blue Collar Classic featuring the 305 sprint cars and limited late models completes the month of June at the track.

Mifflintown drivers are on top of the limited late model standings.

Lane Snook leads Ryan Zook by only five points. Nick Sweigart leads the 305 points by 5 over Logan Spahr and 15 over Kruz Kepner and Mike Melair.

The late models return to Port Royal on July 5. York’s Rick Eckert currently leads the points by 95 over Colton Flinner. Eckert has two wins this season. Justin Weaver is 100 points back in third followed by three-time track champion Dylan Yoder in fourth and Dillan Stake in fifth.

At Williams Grove Friday night, the USAC sprint cars and the winged 410 sprint cars make up the program. It will be Fan Appreciation Night and the pit area will be open from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Free chips and candy will be handed out as well. Freddie Rahmer leads the points by 50 over Troy Wagaman Jr., and 90 over Danny Dietrich.

In less than two weeks, the 35th edition of Pennsylvania Sprint Car Speedweek kicks off at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday, June 27. The series moves to Lincoln that Saturday and then the BAPS Motor Speedway on Sunday.

The series goes back to Lincoln on Monday, June 30, then to Grandview Speedway on Tuesday. Port Royal’s first Speedweek race is Wednesday, July 2, followed by a trip south of the border to Hagerstown, Md., Speedway on Thursday, July 3. Williams Grove’s Mitch Smith Memorial paying $20,000 to win is Friday, July 4. Port Royal hosts the Greg Hodnett Classic on Saturday, July 5, and the series concludes on Sunday, July 6, at Path Valley Speedway.

Recent Speedweek champions include Kyle Larson in 2020, Danny Dietrich in 2021, Brent Marks in 2022 and Anthony Macri, winner of the last two. A total of 11 different drivers have at least one Speedweek championship led by Fred Rahmer with 13. There have been 246 Speedweek races held at 12 different tracks with 49 different feature winners. Dewease has the most Speedweek wins with 31.
