McVeytown moves closer to Babe Ruth title

BURNHAM — The race for the top spot in the Mifflin County Babe Ruth League got a lot smaller on Thursday night.

McVeytown, the league leader with a 16-1 mark, downed the defending league champion, Burnham, 15-5, and in the process mathematically eliminated Burnham (12-5) and Milroy (10-5) from the race.

The only two teams that can still claim the 2025 Mifflin County title are McVeytown and Beaver Springs (12-3).

The game between McVeytown and Burnham ended after six innings due to the 10-run rule.

Gatlin Kauffman started for McVeytown and had four stellar innings. Kauffman held Burnham to two runs on four hits.

But, with one out in the fifth stanza, Kauffman ran into trouble. Noah Wolfkiel and Liam Shaffer singled and then Cohen Leister hit his sixth homer of the year, a three-run shot. Chase Benfer followed with a single and in came Carson Cherry.

Cherry shut down the rally in short order. He faced six men, gave up one hit, no runs and struck out three.

McVeytown pounded out 10 hits in the victory. The league leaders had eight men get hits.

Cullen Busch and Cherry each had two hits. Busch, Cherry, Bo Benny and Landon Pecht each had doubles for McVeytown. Busch and Kauffman each scored three runs and Benny knocked in three runs.

Burnham finished with nine hits. Wolfkiel, Leister and Benfer each had two hits.

The win for McVeytown manager, Denny Yetter, moved him into 17th place on the Mifflin County manager list for victories. Yetter is now 56-42 at McVeytown and overall counting his All-Star record is 68-46.

The four men that he passed in the last week were Ted Rhoades, Milroy (65-121), Gerry Knepp, McVeytown, 65-92; Lloyd Cavanaugh, Sr., Belltown, 67-90 and Bub Parker, Strodes Mills, 67-27.

REEDSVILLE 11, LEWISTOWN 3

LEWISTOWN — Reedsville won its second game in a row with an 11-3 triumph over Lewistown. Reedsville is now 7-11 and in sixth place.

Reedsville used four pitchers to get the win. Karter Kanagy went the first two innings and picked up the win. Reedsville led after two frames, 6-1. Kanagy gave up no hits, walked one and struck out three. Jaxson Parkes, Noah Bunch and Cam Kauffman closed out the win.

Reedsville had five hits with Kauffman getting two. Caden McClure, Jude Zook and Bunch each had one. Zook had a two-run double in the second when Reedsville scored six runs.

The four Reedsville pitchers held Lewistown to four hits. Getting singles for Lewistown were Jared Sickles, Landon Bowen, Luke Bloom and Bentyn Ishler.

This marked Lewistown’s 670th game since joining the league in 1999. Lewistown is 413-257.
