HERSHEY – By the end of Monday’s loss to Faith Christian Academy, you didn’t need the box score. You didn’t need the highlights. You didn’t even need to look at the scoreboard. You could just watch the Mount Union Trojans walk off the field – heads down, bats cold, pitching masterpiece wasted.

Mount Union fell 2-0 to the Lions in the semifinals in the PIAA Class 2A Tournament at Memorial Field at Hershey High School in Hershey. The Trojans’ offense, which had exploded for 28 runs in the previous three games, was held to a paltry one hit.

Mount Union starter Davin Yocum was masterful – except for the fourth inning where he surrendered a pair of runs. The senior struck out 11 Faith Christian batters and surrendered four hits and two runs over 6 1/3 innings while walking five.

As dominant as Yocum was, Faith Christian starter Reid Miller was even better, tossing a complete-game, one-hit shutout, striking out 10 and walking two.

An error enabled Faith Chrisitan (21-2) to post its two runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Noah Wilson opened the frame with a single and was sacrificed to second by Logan Labs. After Madden Marcks singled to put runners at the corners, Jude Clymer walked to load the bases.

Miller then reached on an error as he hit a ground ball to third base, allowing both Wilson and Marcks to score the only runs of the ballgame. Yocum put an end to the rally by striking out Jagger Verbit and Brandon Labs.

Faith Christian also threatened in the first, but Verbit was out at home on a grounder and Yocum struck out Collin Kim to end the inning.

The Trojans (20-5) put together their own scoring chance in the bottom of the first as Jamon Ranck and Dylan Shawver walked back-to-back with one out. It fizzled when Ranck got picked off second and Levi Hunsinger struck out.

Mount Union got its only hit on the game in the third as Maddox Hobbs singled on a line drive to left with one out. The freshman was left stranded as Julian Weirich then popped out and Ranck grounded out.

Trojan reliever Cody McClain tossed the final 2/3 of an inning, giving up two hits.

Offensively, Kim ended up with two of Faith Christian’s six hits. Wilson also walked twice.

The Lions will face Freedom Area (18-7) on Friday in the state championship game at Penn State’s Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Freedom beat Mercyhurst Prep on Monday, 2-0.

Starting at $2.99/week.
