Huskies to hit the links for football fundraiser
LEWISTOWN — When last we saw the Mifflin County Huskies, quarterback Fletcher Wilson was lofting a fourth-down-and-16 60-yard prayer to Cyrell Green for a come-from-behind 21-18 victory over Red Land in Mitchell Field’s swansong.
That was last season. The new year has brought lots of changes for the Mifflin County football program.
A shiny new stadium will greet the Huskies and their fans when the team christens Kish Bank Field at Donald M. Chapman III Stadium – part of the new Huskies Multi-Sports Complex – at their Aug. 22 season opener against Central Mountain.
Nearly a dozen Mifflin County players recently took part in the Central Pennsylvania Coaches Association Football Combine recently at Bald Eagle Area High School in Wingate. “The boys had a great showing and are working hard in the offseason,” Mifflin County head coach Shane Breon said. “There’s a lot going on right now; it’s been a busy couple of months.”
The Huskies have also unveiled a new website, www.mifflincountyfootball.com, which is a treasure trove of information for die-hard Husky fans.
The website offers player information; schedules; alumni data on all-stars, college players and even a film archive; event updates for the youth camp and Second Annual Mifflin County Football Golf Tournament.
This year’s golf outing is slated for the links at Lewistown Country Club at 1 p.m. Friday, June 27, and will be held rain or shine. The cost is $400 per foursome, which includes two carts, or $100 per individual. The fee also includes a complimentary Mifflin County football hat for every player. Contests will also be held for closest to the pin, longest drive and for putting.
“The funds raised from the golf tournament help fund our program directly in several ways,” Breon said. “The funds provide us the opportunity to travel to or host a team camp, and enable us to participate in various 7-on-7 events throughout the summer which allows us to teach and install our offensive and defensive schemes early.
“These events allow our players to bond as a team and make additional memories while giving us an advantage heading into the season,” Breon added.
Registration is from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with tee-offs slated for 1 p.m. A complimentary meal before the tee-off will be held in the banquet room, with your choice of chicken or pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, salad, dessert and beverages.
Golfers can register at the team’s new website. Click the link at the top of the homepage. Checks should be made payable to Mifflin County Football Boosters and mailed to Tara Reeder, 8 S. Parkway Ct., Lewistown, PA 17044.
Breon recognized Reeder and the golf committee for their hard work with the upcoming event.
“Funds raised also go toward providing team wear, pre- and post-game team meals for all games, locker name tags, senior jersey replacements and other miscellaneous expenses required to run a high school football program,” Breon explained. “Your golfing and sponsorship participation in this golf tournament will help ensure each Husky football player and their families have the best experience possible.”
Husky players will have their own individual lockers for the first time this year, along with meeting and coaches rooms and a big, long white board.
“We can talk about something then go right out of the field and implement what we talked about,” Breon said of the new stadium. “The new stadium complex is going to be awesome. We’re getting close to getting those things done.”
Last year, upgrades were also made to the team’s weight room. The Third Annual Mifflin County Youth Football Camp will be held at the new turf practice field adjacent to the junior high tennis courts from July 15-17 for youngsters in grades 1 to 8 in Mifflin, Juniata and neighboring counties.
Breon would also like Mifflin County to host its own team camp.
The football booster club supports about 140 players at the junior high, freshman, junior varsity and varsity levels.
“Last year’s tournament was a huge success thanks to the support of many local community-minded businesses,” Breon added.
And the Husky coach expects more of the same this year.
