LEWISTOWN — Mt. Union’s Dylan Shawver and Levi Hunsinger each had one RBI and that was enough to take down Mifflin County in Friday’s baseball action at Capouillez Field, 2-0.

Before the action, the Mifflin County youth teams were recognized and then the Huskies took the mound. Parker Crownover was the starting pitcher for the Huskies on Friday.

“I think we were just in a mental block with our hitting. I think we are a very good team when we hit. I think we just need to get past it and transfer the bats from the batting cage and I really think we can be a really good hitting team,” Crownover explained.

Senior Davin Yocum was on the mound for Mount Union and led his team to victory, which ended the Huskies’ three-game winning streak. He went seven innings, allowed five hits, no runs, no walks and one strikeout.

Friday’s victory makes it four in a row for the Trojans and head coach Tim Hicks credits a portion of it to Yocum.

“We have said from Day 1, it’s all about pitching, throwing strikes and playing good defense. We did a sensational job of that today, from this guy (Davin Yocum) pitching and this guy (Jamon Ranck) made a whole bunch of plays at shortstop. Pitching and defense, it’s how we win games,” Hicks noted.

Yocum agreed, “I think the key to our winning streak has been pitching and defense. We got the first two runs in the first three innings and then pitching shut them down and defense shut them down for the rest of the game, it was awesome.”

It was a hard fight from both teams for the entirety of the game, however Mount Union’s offense was stronger for the majority of the game.

“I’m not going to lie, I’m a little disappointed. We will be okay, we’ve been here before. It gives us something to work on and we certainly have some adjustments to make but I’m confident in our guys and we have got to wipe this pretty quickly because we have a game Saturday morning so we just have to push this game aside and do better Saturday,” Huskies head coach Ray Hoppel said regarding the offense.

Despite the outcome, both teams enjoy the matchup against each other.

“It’s such a big school and we always get so much energy from them,” Mt. Union sophomore Jamon Ranck explained.

Hicks agreed, “Being a smaller school, when we come here, we know we are going to see great competition. They have a great team every year and it’s always a great game to play in.”
