Wise homers in Haven’s baseball sweep
ETTRICK, Va. – Nathan Wise homered twice in his debut and the pitching staff threw a pair of gems to lead the Lock Haven baseball team (2-0 overall) to a 3-0, 9-2 sweep over State University (0-5 overall) in a non-conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon (Feb. 7).
Wise led a strong Bald Eagles’ offense by going 4-for-6, with a home run, double and four RBIs in the two games. On the afternoon, the Haven totaled 12 runs on 16 hits.
On the mound, Matt Lingenfelter and Garrett Starr earned victories with strong starts on the mound, while Will Stambaugh and Kevin Grenninger shut the door to earn saves in both games.
Game 1 Recap: Lock Haven 3 – Virginia State 0
In game one, Bald Eagles’ starting pitcher Lingenfelter threw a five-inning gem to earn his first victory of the season. The senior allowed just two hits and struck out four.
Grenninger secured the combined shutout and the save as he closed the door over the final two innings by striking out five-of-six hitters.
Wise (HR), Jaxson Pupo and Jake Ambrosio drove in runs for Lock Haven.
Ethan Nagy (2-for-4), Zachary McEllroy (3-for-4, 2B), Wise (2-for-3, HR) and Bryce Vincent (2-for-4, 2B) finished with multiple hits.
The Bald Eagles scored their first run of the season in the top of the second inning after Nick White drew a leadoff walk and was later driven in on an RBI single by Jake Ambrosio. Bryce Vincent also singled during the frame.
The Haven extended its lead to 3-0 with two runs in the top of the fifth. Nathan Wise jump started the rally with a leadoff no-doubt home run, while Jaxon Pupo also drove in a run with an sacrifice fly.
Game 2 Recap: Lock Haven 9 – Virginia State 2
In the nightcap, Lock Haven scored nine runs on six hits, including a five-run rally in the seventh inning to soar to victory and earn the sweep.
Starr earned the victory on the mound after going five innings, striking out four and limiting VSU to a pair of runs.
Stambaugh earned the save after tossing two-scoreless innings and striking out three.
Wise hit his second homer of the afternoon and added a double and three RBIs.
Vincent (2) and McEllroy (2B) also drove in runs.
Leading 4-2 in the top of the seventh, the Bald Eagles erupted for five runs on two hits, while taking advantage of one VSU error.
