Huskies top Rams on Senior Night, 38-27
LEWISTOWN — Mifflin County wrestling celebrated Senior Night and Mini-Thon Gold Out in grand fashion as several seniors made an impact in the Huskies’ 38-27 win over Penns Valley on Thursday.
The Huskies (7-3, 2-2 Mid-Penn) got a 9-8 decision from Jake Knable as he beat Ram Tripp Watson in the 133-pound bout.
Kamden Everly, at 139, got a major decision (10-1) over visitor Zach Rummel.
“Most of the seniors have been with the program for four years now so they just have the experience that helps to create good leadership, and hopefully they are leading by example, and in tonight’s match all the seniors wrestled really well and led by example,” Huskies head coach Kirby Martin explained.
“When they were young they made a lot of technical mistakes and I think they have improved a lot with their technique, they work hard in practice and have improved in the area of their conditioning. But, the biggest thing we really want them to continue to work on is just mental strength and learning how to be less nervous when they go out to compete.”
At 285, Peyton Kearns pinned Ram Riley Winkelblech at the 2:30 mark.
“I wasn’t really worried about it. I just went out there and wrestled. I kind of took control and did what I had to do and pinned him,” Kearns spoke about his performance.
“I felt pretty good. I could’ve done a little bit better, could have got a couple more takedowns in the first period but you know, coming out with a pin in the second period was good. So I just have to keep wrestling and get more takedowns and hopefully get a pin faster.”
Mifflin County continues their winning ways in 2024-25. They’ve won six matches in a row to open their January slate and they finished first in the Turner Holiday Classic last month.
“I mean we have a great wrestling program here in Mifflin County. I think we have one of the best coaches, he puts us to work everyday and doesn’t give us breaks. When you don’t have any breaks it means you’re getting one percent better,” Kearns added about the Mifflin County program.
Husky Avery Aurand also pinned Penns Valley’s Shane Rimmey in the 189-pound bout at 34 seconds.
Colby Seiler pinned Ram Seth Fetterolf at 16 seconds during the 152-pound bout.
Senior night is a night of reflection for the seniors who are getting ready to graduate and start a new journey as well as the coaches who have shaped the wrestlers along the way.
“The amount of time they have been around me, they know my expectations and they are an extension of us as a staff and they do a good job of helping to bring the rest of the kids along and making sure that people are making good choices,” Martin acknowledged.
“Looking at all of these other schools I feel like I could’ve gone anywhere but being a Husky is awesome. It’s where my family grew up, my brother was a Husky for all of his high school career and now I am coming in and filling his shoes, so it’s cool,” Kearns reflected.
Reese Christine, at 172, got a major decision (13-3) over visitor Robert Martin.
Next, the Huskies visit Midd-West at 7 p.m. next Wednesday.
