Fairfield fends off EJ boys for win

FAIRFIELD — Trailing by seven points entering the fourth quarter, the East Juniata Tigers rallied but fell just short in a 44-42 non-league loss at Fairfield on Saturday.

Wrett Smith paced the Tigers (3-6) with a game-high 17 points, while teammate Sam Kopacki added 11 points. Smith, Kopacki, Nathan Carolus and Jaiden May each scored two points in the first quarter as East Juniata trailed 12-8 early. Gabe Williams scored five of his 16 points in the frame for the Knights (3-5) and teammate Jayden Bell also added five points to lead Fairfield.

Smith scored three points in the second and Carolus hit for two more as the Tigers went into the lockerroom down 21-13. In the third quarter, three-pointers by Kopacki, Smith and Eric Nipple rallied East Juniata within 31-24.

Smith netted nine points in the fourth quarter, but the Tiger rally fell short. May added five of his seven points in the frame, while Kopacki added four points.

Smith ended up with three three-pointers but East Juniata connected on 5-of-22 attempts from long range. The Knights hit on 3 of 12 threes.

The Tigers host York Country Day today.

Cardinals too much

for Belleville Mennonite

WATERFALL — Belleville Mennonite traveled to Forbes Road and fell to the host Cardinals 59-40 in non-league action Saturday. The Thunder (1-5), which trailed 24-15 at the half, got a 20-point effort from Bryson Peachey and 10 points from Clay Ammon. Forbes Road improved to 9-1.

Belleville Mennonite travels to Great Commission on Tuesday.

Mustangs stopped

MIDDLEBURG — D’zani Coley scored 15 points and Nash Grover added 10 points in the Midd-West Mustangs’ 67-40 Heartland Athletic Conference crossover loss to Shikellamy on Saturday.

Coley and Grover each scored five points in the first quarter as Midd-West (2-6) trailed 17-10 early. Asher Moyer scored seven of his game-high 16 points in the opening stanza for the Indians (2-9). The Mustangs rallied in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 27-21 at the half – as Cooley struck for four points and Chase Shattuck added three points.

Shikellamy started to pull away in the third quarter as Moyer had four points and Charlie Water three more as the Braves built their lead to 40-28. A 27-12 run in the fourth quarter sealed the victory as Hunter Biddle struck for eight of his 12 points for the Braves. Shikellamy had nine players reach the scoring column.

Brandon Ferster scored six of his eight points in the final period for Midd-West, while Gabe Romig added four points.

The Mustangs visit Mifflinburg today.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Tigers fall at Forbes Road

WATERFALL — Karina Renno scored 11 points and Katelynn Renno added 10 points but it wasn’t enough as Belleville Mennonite School dropped a 48-27 non-league decision at Forbes Road on Saturday.

Karina Renno struck for six points in the opening quarter by drilling a pair of three-pointers as the Thunder (4-4) trailed 13-10 after one quarter. Katelynn Renno added two points in the first quarter then two more in the second; however, her two points were the only points Belleville Mennonite managed in the second stanza. Forbes Road (3-7) outscored the Thunder 17-2 in the frame and took a 30-12 lead at the half.

Belleville Mennonite fought back in the third quarter as Karina Renno scored five points and Lily Yoder added two more, but the Thunder still trailed 38-20. Katelynn Renno pumped in five points in the final period and Angie Weaver added two more to set the final.

Gennah Kendall, Emma Skiles and Kinsley Small each finished with nine points for the Cardinals.
