Alexander, Kearns place 2nd at King of Mountain
Huskies finish fifth overall
MILL HALL — The Mifflin County Huskies finished fifth in the team standings at the prestigious King of the Mountain Tournament held at Central Mountain High School on Saturday. Andrew Alexander and Peyton Kearns were the top finisher for the Huskies individually as they both second in their respective weights.
At 107 pounds, Alexander dropped a 4-2 decision to Shaler’s Anthony Jones in the final. He reached the final by edging Williamsport’s Jordan Piselli 1-0 in his championship round opener, blanking Greater Latrobe’s Kai Maxwell 9-0 in the quarterfinals and winning by injury default over Parkland’s Luis Moya in the semifinals.
At 285, Kearns lost to Brookville’s Gavin Hannah 4-1 in the championship final. Kearns advanced by pinning Brookville’s Bobby Hack in 1:11 in his championship round opener, pinning Line Mountain’s Jackson Kauwell in 1:48, stopping Bethel Park’s Michael Gibson 4-0 in the quarterfinals and blanking Montoursville’s Landon Morehart 4-0 in the semifinals.
At 189, the Huskies’ Avery Aurand knocked off Brookville’s Easton Belfiore 4-1 in the third-place match. Aurand opened the championship round by pinning Bellefonte’s Luke Hockenberry in 3:22 and blanking Parkland’s Christopher Toth 4-0. Aurand beat Belfiore again in the quarters 4-0 before falling to Bald Eagle Area’s Caleb Close in a 16-0 technical fall in 4:42. Aurand rebounded to beat Warrior Run’s Tyler Ulrich 8-1.
At 139, Mifflin County’s Kamden Everly suffered a 6-4 setback to Boyertown’s Beck Babb in the third-place bout. On his way to a fourth-place finish, Everly pinned Line Mountain’s Waylon Shaffer in 3:57, topped Owen J. Roberts’ Alex Brandt 3-0 and lost to Cranberry’s Elijah Brosius 13-3. Everly battled back by stopping Bellefonte’s Cameron Garcia with a 12-2 major decision, besting Bethel Park’s Aden Stout 11-6 and advancing in the semis with a 7-3 win over Central Mountain’s Patrick Tarantella.
At 152, the Huskies’ Colby Seiler ended up eighth as he was pinned by Central York’s Nathaniel Replogle in 3:00 in the seventh-place bout. Seiler opened championship play by dominating Bald Eagle Area’s Alex Surovec in a 19-4 technical fall in 3:50. Seiler then pinned Montoursville’s Ryan Meredith in 1:08 before losing to Bellefonte’s Ezra Swisher 4-0. Seiler rebounded to beat Boyertown’s Logan Oakes 7-5 then lost to Red Lion’s Wylan Damon 4-0.
Montoursville captured the team title with 156 points, with Central Mountain second at 142, Altoona third at 137.5, State College fourth at 123 and Mifflin County fifth at 118. The Huskies wrestle at Conestoga on Friday.

Cooley, Romig lead
Mustangs past Buffs
MIDDLEBURG — Zani Cooley scored a game-high 17 points and Gabe Romig added 12 points as the Midd-West Mustangs dominated visiting Newport 59-26 in non-league action on Saturday.
Cooley scored 11 of his points in the opening quarter as the Mustangs raced to a 20-4 lead. Romig added four points in the frame.
Brandon Ferster hit for five of his nine points in the second quarter as Midd-West led 30-8 at the break. Cooley went back to work in the third quarter, scoring six points and Romig added six more as the Mustangs led 45-20. Chase Shattuck hit for all six of his points in the fourth quarter as Midd-West continued to pull away. Landon Zaring scored 10 points to lead Newport.
The Mustangs host Shikellamy on Jan. 4.
GIRLS WRESTLING
Bryner, Krepps place
at Baguba Brawl
ELIZABETHTOWN — The Juniata Indians had two wrestlers place at the Baguba Brawl at Elizabethtown on Saturday. At 124 points, Madison Bryner placed third individually while Katelynn Krepps finished fifth at 235.
Bryner went 6-1 in the tournament. Her last four decisions came via fall as she decked Palmerton Area’s Cassidy Merkel in 1:37 then did the same to Boiling Spring’s Anjila Gurung in 1:07 and Penn Manor’s Juanita Blake in 2:31. Bryner suffered a loss to South Western’s Tatum Duckworth in the championship semifinals – a fall in 1:21 – but she bounced back to pin Wilson West Lawn’s Hayley Cilento in 3:19 in the third-place match.
Krepps went 5-1. In the championship round, she lost her opener via fall to Bedford’s Mylah Steinbuch in 2:26. Krepps responded with three-straight pins, downing Upper Dauphin’s Lydia Engle in 59 seconds, Spring Grove’s Sylvyia Rivera in 1:27 and Elizabethtown’s Braelynn Lee in 35 seconds in the fifth-place bout.
At 142, Jordana Steffen won three of her five bouts via fall. She bowed out in the consolation second round. At 130, Willow Stong picked up a win in three bouts and, at 124, Bethany Reichard lost all four of her matches.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Cramer, Tigers
flip Forbes Road
COCOLAMUS — Landyn Cramer scored 11 points and Kennedy Seigler-Lewis and Madison Snyder each added eight points as the East Juniata Tigers slipped by Forbes Road, 40-36, in non-league action on Saturday. Seigler-Lewis scored five of her points in the opening quarter as the Tigers grabbed a 10-4 lead early. She and Snyder added three in the second quarter as East Juniata extended its lead to 24-14 at the half.
Cramer accounted for four of the Tigers’ six points in the third quarter as Forbes Road rallied within 30-21. Kinsley Small, who finished with a game-high 17 points for the Cardinals, scored 10 of those points in the final stanza as Forbes Road’s rally fell just short. Snyder answered with five points for East Juniata and Cramer added four points.
Both teams struggled from the foul line as the Tigers made 4 of 14 attempts, while Forbes Road connected on only 2 of 11.
East Juniata visits Bald Eagle Area today.
Huskies routed on
road by State College
STATE COLLEGE — A 28-1 run in the third quarter lifted host State College to a 68-29 victory over the Mifflin County Huskies Saturday night. Mackenzie Peachey led Mifflin County with seven points, while Jalee Bodtorf added six points.
The Huskies trailed 33-23 at the half as Leah Reed scored all five of her points in the first quarter. Mifflin County trailed 18-11 early. Peachey scored four points in the second quarter and Payton Weaver and Bodtorf each drained three-pointers to keep the Huskies within striking distance.
A free throw by Peachey proved to be Mifflin County’s only point in the third. Sienna Wilson, who finished with a game-high 16 points, and Sheree Wilson, who added 12 points, combined to score 17 of the Little Lions’ 28 points in the frame. Bodtorf hit another three in the fourth and Ava Baker added two free throws as the Huskies managed five points in the fourth quarter and six in the second half.
The Huskies head to Carlisle tonight.
Middies fall to
visiting Buffaloes
MIDDLEBURG — Izzy Walter scored nine points and Emma Wagner added eight points but it wasn’t enough as the Midd-West Mustangs dropped a 36-25 non-league matchup with Newport on Saturday.
Cali Sauer scored three points in the first quarter and Wagner added two points as the Mustangs trailed 7-6 early. A free throw by Nittany Weaver was the only point Midd-West mustered in the second quarter as Newport extended its lead to 17-7 at the half.
Midd-West closed within 26-17 after three quarters as Walter and Wagner each scored four points. Walter added four more in the fourth but the Buffaloes pulled away for the victory.
The Mustangs play in the Montgomery Christmas Tournament on Friday.
