Locals help lift Juniata to dramatic win over Keystone
LA PLUME, Pa. – Down 20 points at halftime and nearly 200 miles from home, it could have been easy for the Juniata College Eagles to pack it in on a disappointing season.
Instead, the feisty Eagles lit up host Keystone College for four second-half touchdowns en route to a dramatic 43-38 Landmark Conference victory at Keystone Turf Field in La Plume, Pa., on Saturday.
Quarterback Calvin German fueled the comeback for Juniata (2-7, 1-4), throwing for 394 yards and three scores on 38-of-61 passing. His favorite targets were wideouts Sean Hakanson and Quintin Stephens, who each finished the game with 10 catches. Hakanson racked up 135 yards and two TDs, while Stephens added 99 yards and one score.
Four area standouts certainly contributed to the Eagles’ victory on all three phases. Senior running back Hunter Wolfley (Midd-West High School/McClure) had 115 all-purpose yards as he rushed the ball 20 times for 91 yards and scored the opening TD of the game. Wolfley also had five receptions for 24 yards.
Sophomore tight end Makih Hunt (Juniata High School/Port Royal) caught three passes for 33 yards. He also had three assisted tackles.
Defensively, lineman Ben Umstead (Midd-West/Middleburg) had one assisted tackle.
After Wolfley’s touchdown put Juniata up 8-0 at the 7:13 mark of the first quarter, Logan Williams returned a fumble 36 yards to increase the margin to 15-0. Keystone (1-9, 0-6) responded with 35 points, sparked by 9- and 20-yard runs by Mujaheed Muhamm.
On special teams, junior Carter Sauer (Midd-West/Middleburg) averaged 39.3 yards on four kickoffs and made a PAT attempt. Sauer also had a tackle.
Wolfley, Hunt and Sauer, who also plays on the offensive line, started the contest.
Hakanson and Stephens grabbed TD throws from German in the third as the Eagles outscored Keystone 13-0 in the frame. Trailing by seven, German ran the ball in from 1-yard out and a successful two-pointer put the Eagles ahead, 36-35.
The Giants responded with a field goal to regain the lead at 38-36, Hakanson scored again with 17 seconds left to lift Juniata to the win. Sauer added the PAT.
Juniata closes out the season by hosting Catholic on Senior Day on Saturday.
LOCK HAVEN 42, SHIPPENSBURG 21
LOCK HAVEN – Trailing 14-0 in the first quarter to visiting Shippensburg on Saturday, Lock Haven rattled off 35 consecutive points to post a 42-21 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference win at Hubert Jack Stadium at Lock Haven.
The Raiders (2-8, 1-6) grabbed the early lead thanks to a pair of touchdown runs by Josiah Leonard – a 5-yarder and 2-yarder.
Lock Haven quarterback Jackson Ostrowsky went to work, shredding the Shippensburg secondary for four second-quarter TD passes. The first two went to T’iar Young, who hauled in 18- and 25-yard receptions for scores. Ostrowsky then hooked up Chris Hicks twice – from 9- and 15-yards out.
Lock Haven’s KJ Howard capped the first-half scoring with a 64-yard TD run to make it a 35-14 game.
Ostrowsky ended the contest 25-of-38 for 329 yards and five TDs. Howard ran for 109 yards, while Young racked up 134 receiving yards on nine catches.
The Bald Eagles, who visit Gannon in its season finale on Saturday, outgained Shippensburg by a 463-322 margin.
