Former Husky earns sportsmanship award

WILLIAMSPORT — Former Mifflin County High School standout Noah Bowers certainly had a senior season to remember running cross country at Penn College in Williamsport.

Bowers finished 33rd overall at this year’s United East Cross County Championships in a time of 31:22.98 to help the Wildcats win the conference title. Penn College finished with 49 points to easily outdistance St. Mary’s (Md.) with 68 points and Penn State-Berks with 97 points.

Now the senior has been named to the United East All-Sportsmanship Team recognizes student-athletes who epitomize the ideals of sportsmanship.

Student-athletes selected to the All-Sportsmanship Team demonstrate fair play, graciousness in victory and respectfulness in defeat.

Each individual has been chosen by their coach as a representative who embodies the Division III spirit.

Bowers opened the season with a ninth-place showing in 23;37 against Lycoming as Penn College won the dual 17-46 on Sept. 3. He followed that up with an 87th in 31:24.3 at the Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen Invite on Sept. 7.

On Sept. 14, Bowers placed 28th in 31:37.2 at Misericordia University’s Cougar Classic. The Wildcats took third in the six-team field. At the DeSales Invitational on Oct. 12, Bowers was 100th in 31:05.1 as the Wildcats were ninth out of 16 teams.

Teats hits for nearly double figures at Penn College

WILLIAMSPORT – Rachel Teats (Midd-West High School/Middleburg) is nearly averaging double figures in points – 9.6 points per game – for the Penn College women’s basketball team this year.

On Nov. 21, Teats scored five points, pulled down six rebounds and dished out three assists to go with two steals in a 74-37 loss at York College.

In a 69-63 loss at Penn State-Altoona, Teats hit for 10 points to go with five rebounds, two assists and a steal.

On Nov. 26, the Wildcats hosted Lancaster Bible College and handed the Chargers a 62-55 defeat. Teats scored 12 points, plus she had six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal.

Penn College is currently 1-4 on the season.

Gannon earns soccer accolades at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Gannon Ryan (East Juniata High School/McAlisterville), a senior at Washington and Jefferson College, earned a spot on the 2024 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® Team, which recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.

Ryan, a four-year member of the W&J soccer team’s front line, wrapped his collegiate career with the Presidents, scoring his first collegiate goal on his senior day against Thiel on Oct. 19. He started 12 of 18 games as W&J ended the year at 7-11-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the President’s Athletic Conference.

The senior forward caps his career with 54 matches played with 23 starts. Ryan is a two-time member of the Fall PAC Academic Honor Roll. Ryan is also the President of the Accounting Society and a member of both the Alpha Lambda Delta and Lambda Pi Eta Honor Societies.

Neimond, McGonigle see year end for Messiah in Sweet 16

GRANTHAM – The Messiah University women’s soccer team dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to the University of Chicago on Nov. 23 in the Division III NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.

The Falcons (18-2-3) fell behind 2-0 but rallied to knot the score at 2-all in the second half. Chicago converted a penalty kick two minutes into overtime to take the victory.

Former East Juniata standouts Thea Neimond and Kierstyn Fogle both played for the Falcons. Neimond started and tallied a shot, while Fogle did not have any statistics.
