MOUNT UNION — The Mount Union girls played their last home game of the season Monday night when they faced District 6 2A power Bellwood-Antis in an Inter County Conference North rematch.

The Trojans played a strong first half against the Blue Devils, working well against their press and scoring from the outside to stay within striking distance.

The Blue Devils came out in the third quarter and swung the momentum in their direction using a strong press and scored in transition to get to the fourth quarter with the lead to great for a Trojan challenge.

The Trojans slip to 3-18 on the season and 2-11 in the ICC North. The Blue Devils are ranked seventh in 2A in the state and stand at 17-4 overall and improve to 11-2 in the ICC North, second in the ICC North behind unbeaten Williamsburg. The Blue Devils two losses are to Williamsburg. They are second in District 6 behind Portage. The Blue Devils won the first meeting against Mount Union early in the season at Bellwood.

“They are very good in the transition game off the fast break,” commented Trojans head coach Haley Myers. “We handled their press early but some turnovers on execution hurt. Good to see Abby Brodbeck knock down the three-point shots tonight.”

The Trojans fell behind 6-0 in the first quarter when Brodbeck drained her first trey. The Blue Devils then hit nine unanswered points to open a 12-point lead. The Trojans added five with a trey from Molly Smith and a bucket from Cailyn Skopic along with a five footer from Chelsea Williams to cut the lead to five. The Blue Devils added four points late to end the first quarter with a nine-point margin.

The Trojans continued to battle the Blue Devil press hard in the second quarter scoring 11 points.

Williams knocked down two treys and Brodbeck hit her second trey of the night and a bucket to claim all the Trojans points. Lydia Worthing added eight to her first quarter six points and the Blue Devils expanded the lead to 39-23 at the break.

The third quarter belonged to the Blue devils with the press holding the Trojans to just six points in the frame. Sophie Smith, Brodbeck and Dimoff all hit a bucket apiece. The Blue Devils poured in 22 points in the quarter to start the mercy clock with a 61-29 score.

The press continued to hold down the Trojans hitting for back-to-back six-point quarters. Crisswell hit a trey and Syneira Cox hit a bucket along with Dimoff adding one from the line. The Blue Devils cleared the bench down the stretch.

Brodbeck and Williams both had 11 points on the night for the Trojans. Lydia Worthing hit for 23 Blue Devil points with Chelsea McCaulsky adding 11 points.

The Trojans finish the regular season schedule on Thursday night at Curwensville in an ICC North contest.
