LORETTO — If you didn’t know any better, you would think Mifflin County was the top seed in District 6 Class 6A softball tournament.

If you didn’t know any better, you would have thought the Huskies swept State College during regular season play this year.

But, despite neither being factual, that didn’t prevent Mifflin County from tossing the Little Lions aside for an 8-0 district title victory at St. Francis University on Wednesday.

Mifflin County’s Madison Wolfgang pitched a perfect game for the Huskies. She went a full seven innings, struck out eight Lions and walked none.

“I think knowing and having confidence in myself and also knowing the defense behind me can stop the balls and make the plays for me. I’m so appreciative of that, so I don’t have to do everything myself.,” Wolfgang said.

Before the game even began, people knew Wolfgang would be hard to beat.

“She was dialed in from the warm-ups. It just continued. She was hitting her spots and provided different pitches,” Huskies coach Craig Weston said. “Sharpy (Alaina Sharp) was catching back there and she was getting us some calls. Pitcher and catcher was a big combination today.”

Through the first three innings it appeared as though runs would be hard to come by for the Huskies.

State College right-hander Zia Bognar didn’t surrender a hit during that time frame as she struck out the side in the second inning and handed out four Ks total to Mifflin County early on.

But, in the fourth frame, Wolfgang had a bunt single and would later score on a Payton McClure double that was blasted to right-center field, making it 1-0 Huskies. McClure went 2-for-4 in the contest with a pair of doubles.

Mifflin County would tack on four runs in the frame and then another four in the fifth inning.

Dakota Hershberger hit a 2-run moon shot over the left field wall, which gives her 10 home runs this season.

It was the beginning of the end for the Little Lions.

“I laid a bunt down and just legged it out. I ran as fast as I could and then we started teeing off. That put stress on them and it built our momentum and adrenaline. We fed off of that and kept going from there,” Wolfgang noted.

Mifflin County (10-9) will play in the state tournament next Wednesday at a time and place to be determined.
