MCALISTERVILLE — The dynamic duo of Peyton Burd and Annika Martin carried the Juniata Christian offense to victory shutting out Belleville Mennonite, 9-0, in an Allegheny Christian Athletic Association girls soccer game on Tuesday.

“I think we played a little sloppy at times, but did enough to get through with a win, but we definitely need to play better,” Lions coach Todd Taylor said. “I think last night was a big game and the girls were pretty pumped up and I think we were pretty flat today, to be quite honest. I got some good play out of some of the girls that came in as subs. They really hustled hard and that’s all you can ask and that was good to get some good playing time to.”

“We have four games this week so it’s a long week,” Taylor continued. “Its good to get the win but we have a lot of things to keep improving on.”

Right from the opening whistle, the Lions pounced, taking possession of the ball and they stormed right to the Belleville Mennonite net.

For a while, the Thunder’s freshman goalkeeper Karina Renno faced the challenge head on. One such example came in the first minute of the game as Erin Sheaffer launched a shot but Renno was able to make the catch.

A little while later, the Lions had another good scoring opportunity as Peyton Burd made passed to Annika Martin who proceeded to take the shot, but another beautiful save by Renno to keep the game scoreless.

Eventually the Juniata Christian offense broke one through to the other side as Sheaffer went on the attack from the outside and moved the ball to Martin, who was waiting and finally drove the ball to the back of the net.

About 10 minutes later, the Lions came back for more as Lydia Goodling found an open Reanna Hoover for Juniata Christian’s second goal.

With 13:58 remaining in the first half, Juniata Christian added another goal as Martin found Burd, who knocked the ball to the top right corner of the net to make it a 3-0 ballgame. Burd then returned the favor to Martin, helping Martin get her second goal of the game and to give the Lions a 4-0 advantage.

Juniata Christian kept rolling with Peyton Burd scoring her second goal of the night on an assist from Reagan Burd, before Goodling scored again to give Juniata Chrstian an insurmountable 6-0 lead at the half.

The offensive assault continued in the second half when Hoover hammered a shot that came back to Martin, who finished things from there to make it 7-0

Peyton Burd recorded a hat trick, scoring the eighth goal of the night for Juniata Christian. The final goal of the game came from Reagan Burd with an assist from junior Brinley Seler to complete the final goal.

The Lions outshot the Thunder 23-1 for the game. The only shot on goal that Belleville Mennonite had came in the second half where sophomore Carianne Vargas had a direct kick attempt and the shot on goal bounced of the top cross bar.

“We had an unfortunate injury at the beginning of the first half which kind of took the girls momentum out of it,” Thunder coach Kelsey Peachey said. “Soo, I felt we played down a bit both halves.”

Thunder keeper Renno collected 14 saves for the game.

“I thought she did great,” Peachey said. “She stepped towards the ball let them know that she wanted it and kept her head in the game.”

Peyton Burd led the Lions with three goals and an assist. Martin scored twice and collected three assists for the game.

“Those two really work well together,” Taylor said. “We look forward to that this year.”

Juniata Christian moves up to (3-2, 3-1) and will host Christian school of York on Thursday. Meanwhile Belleville Mennonite drops to (2-2) and will look to get back into the win column on Friday as the Thunder travels to Walnut Street Christian.

“Just more experience and confidence,” Peachey said. “Each game is an opportunity to get better, that’s what we’re working towards.”
